APOLAN Celebrates Optical LAN Innovators With 2023 Technology Awards

The Association for Passive Optical LAN (APOLAN), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the education and global adoption of Optical Local Area Networks, recently announced the recipients of the prestigious 2023 APOLAN Awards. These awards were presented to distinguished individuals and member companies that have significantly contributed to the association's mission of fostering the adoption and evolution of fiber optic local access networks for enterprises. The award ceremony took place during the APOLAN Annual Member Meeting on February 8, 2024.

The APOLAN Education Award was bestowed upon Tellabs in recognition of its Optical LAN Network Planning and Design Class. This complimentary three-day course is tailored for network engineers tasked with designing and planning networks for optical LAN. Tellabs' commitment to providing education on optical LAN and its benefits underscores the importance of knowledge-sharing within the industry.

2023 APOLAN Optical LAN Awards

Corning, Dirtt, and Qypsys were jointly awarded the APOLAN Excellence Award for their collaborative efforts on the Rock Hill Manufacturing Plant project. This partnership exemplified effective team coordination, efficient problem-solving, and exemplary execution of project plans, resulting in a future-ready, cost-effective, and streamlined OLAN system installation. The project notably met the client’s requirements for scalability, flexibility, reliability, and minimal downtime.

Innovation in Optical LAN

Tellabs was also the recipient of the APOLAN Innovation Award for its pioneering optical LAN carbon reduction calculator. This tool represents a significant advancement in the industry by helping IT and network professionals, architects, and engineers estimate the embodied and operational carbon savings offered by passive optical LAN technologies.

International Contributions Celebrated

The APOLAN International Award was presented to ITTERA in honor of Miguelangel Ochoa’s contributions to the optical LAN industry. Ochoa has played a pivotal role in the international expansion and recognition of APOLAN and optical LAN technologies, demonstrating the global impact of these advancements.

Championing Optical LAN

Ron Valez, a retired director of technology and independent consultant, received the APOLAN Champion Award. Valez has been instrumental in raising awareness and increasing the visibility of optical LAN benefits. His efforts include deploying passive optical network technology at White Plains Schools with guidance from one of APOLAN’s founding members, IBM.

The 2023 APOLAN Awards highlight the significant achievements within the optical LAN industry, recognizing those who have led by example in education, innovation, installation excellence, international expansion, and advocacy. These awards not only celebrate past successes but also inspire future advancements in the field.
