Angela Carini Apologizes To Imane Khelif Following Olympic Bout Controversy

Italian boxer Angela Carini, who stopped her Olympic bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds, has publicly apologised to her opponent. The incident, which has generated significant controversy, saw Carini retreat to her corner twice before ultimately halting the fight.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Carini expressed regret for not shaking hands with Khelif following the abrupt end of their match. "It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini said. "Actually, I want to apologise to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke."

Respecting IOC's Decision

Carini faced backlash for her actions but stated that she respects the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to allow Khelif to compete despite the controversy surrounding her eligibility. "If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision," Carini added.

The bout took place on Thursday and ended when Carini received a punch to the face within the first 30 seconds. She went to her corner for her coach to adjust her headgear. After briefly resuming, she returned to her corner and stopped the fight entirely. She described this as a necessary step for her well-being. "It could have been the match of a lifetime, but I had to preserve my life as well in that moment," she told BBC Sport.

Controversy Surrounding Khelif

Imane Khelif's participation in the Olympics has been contentious due to her disqualification from last year's Women's World Championships for failing eligibility criteria set by the Russia-led International Boxing Association (IBA). Despite this, the IOC defended Khelif's right to compete. Spokesperson Mark Adams stated, "The Algerian boxer was born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport."

In response to the situation, IBA President Umar Kremlev announced that Carini would be offered $100,000—the prize money for gold medallists at the Games. The amount is divided with half going to Carini, a quarter to her trainer, and a quarter to her federation.

A Desire for Reconciliation

Carini expressed a desire to make amends with Khelif and stated that if they meet again, she would "embrace her." This incident has highlighted ongoing debates about athlete eligibility and pressures faced by competitors at high levels of sport.

As the Olympic Games continue, focus on fair play, respect, and athletes' mental health remains crucial. Carini's apology and reflections on the incident remind us of sports' human side where emotions and decisions are influenced by high stakes and intense pressures.
