Angel City Lumber Joins Forces With U.S. Forest Service To Revitalize Local Lumber Supply In Los Angeles
Angel City Lumber has announced a collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, specifically through the Angeles National Forest, located 50 miles from the Boyle Heights Sawmill. This partnership involves milling local trees identified as safety hazards or snags, which exceed the U.S. Forest Service’s Fish and Wildlife Standards. The processed lumber will be available for commercial and residential sale in Los Angeles County.
By participating in the Angeles National Forest Land Management Plan, Angel City Lumber aims to enhance its local lumber model. This initiative will utilize forest trees that would otherwise be turned into mulch or become fire hazards. The Land Management Plan emphasizes wildlife habitat, forest floor biome, traditional tribal use areas, and cultural and historic standards, providing an opportunity to integrate intentionality and tree recognition into sawmill production.

Angel City Lumber is set to introduce its inaugural "Forest Floor(ing)" line. This product features wide-board, tongue-and-groove, end-matched, 1" thick solid wood flooring made from Ponderosa pine and Jeffrey pine. The launch of this product line is supported by the Forest Service’s Wood Innovations Grant, which Angel City Lumber has received.
In addition to flooring, Angel City Lumber will produce structural timber, non-structural lumber, and millwork products for the Los Angeles County community. These products will be derived from trees removed through contracted fuel removal efforts.
Jeff Perry, CEO of Angel City Lumber, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: "The chance to aid the U.S. Forest Service in carrying out its Angeles National Forest Land Management Plan while bringing attention and intention to the individual fallen trees of Crystal Lake and Charlton Flats in hopefully this first-iteration partnership is an honour for us. Our attentiveness, intentionality, and focus will be on these individual and collective trees and manufacturing high-quality local products for the Los Angeles community, connecting Angelenos to their native forest. We have the utmost awareness of how important it is to get this right."
