Alstom Enhances Urban Mobility In Porto With Advanced Signalling On New Pink Line
Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has recently secured a contract with Metro do Porto to supply the signalling, safety, and control systems for the new pink line of Porto's metro. This collaboration marks another significant step towards enhancing the mobility of both citizens and tourists in Porto. The project will see the implementation of Alstom's Cityflo 250 signalling system, which includes advanced interlocking for real-time vehicle monitoring.
The engineering, installation, and commissioning of these systems will be carried out at Alstom's facilities in Maia, located in the Porto district. This initiative not only underscores Alstom's commitment to promoting sustainable mobility in Portugal but also leverages its extensive experience in signalling projects and digital mobility technologies.

The pink line, which will stretch over 3 kilometres and include four underground stations, aims to connect S. Bento with Glorieta de Boavista. This connection is expected to significantly enhance access to Porto's centre, with a projected increase in demand of over 30 million passengers in its first year of operation. The introduction of this line is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion significantly and contribute to environmental sustainability by avoiding almost 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
Metro do Porto's vision extends beyond the pink line, with plans to expand it into a circular route that integrates seamlessly with the existing metro network. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to accommodate the city's growing transportation needs, which sees around 70 million passengers annually across its six lines and approximately 78 km of track.
David Torres, Alstom in Portugal Managing Director, expressed pride in partnering once again with Metro do Porto. He highlighted the project as a testament to Alstom's dedication to advancing sustainable mobility solutions in Portugal and beyond. Alstom's history with Metro do Porto includes supplying the network with 102 trains currently in service and providing the onboard ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system for an additional 18 trains added to the fleet.
Alstom has been a prominent figure in Portugal's transportation sector for over three decades. Currently, two out of every three trains operating in Portugal are manufactured by Alstom or equipped with its technology. This includes high-speed, regional, metro, and tram trains. Furthermore, Alstom manages more than 1,500 km of the Portuguese rail network and over 500 on-board units through its ATP system, tailored specifically for the Portuguese market.
With over 30 years of expertise in communications-based train control (CBTC) and having equipped over 190 metro lines in more than 32 countries, Alstom continues to lead in the mass transit market. The partnership with Metro do Porto on the pink line project further solidifies Alstom's position as a key player in delivering innovative and sustainable mobility solutions worldwide.
