Aireon Launches Innovative Safety Dashboard For Global Air Traffic Surveillance

Aireon, a pioneering space-based air traffic surveillance company, has recently unveiled its latest innovation: the Safety Dashboard. This web-based tool is meticulously designed to assist air navigation service providers (ANSPs) in pinpointing and tracking leading indicators of operational risks within their managed airspace. By offering a visual representation of critical risk indicators, the dashboard enables users to benchmark their event data against that of their peers, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and safety enhancement.

The data fueling the Safety Dashboard's insights is sourced from Aireon's global space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system. This technology is renowned for its reliability and is currently utilized by over half of the world's ANSPs. Among the initial metrics featured on the dashboard are Traffic Collision and Avoidance System (TCAS) alerts, risks of runway overruns, and transponder emergency codes—vital data points for maintaining airspace safety.

Aireon's New Safety Dashboard

In collaboration with key customers such as the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO), Aireon is dedicated to expanding the dashboard's capabilities. Future metrics under consideration include high-speed rejected take-offs and an Oceanic Risk metric. This initiative underscores Aireon's commitment to enhancing proactive risk identification and the monitoring of mitigation measures' effectiveness.

Peter Cabooter, Aireon's Vice President of Customer Affairs, emphasized the dashboard's role in empowering safety professionals to benchmark performance and implement preventative measures against accidents. Similarly, Simon Hocquard, Director General of CANSO, highlighted the critical importance of fostering a robust safety culture within aviation that extends beyond mere incident reaction.

NAV CANADA, recognized as an ADS-B pioneer, has emerged as the first ANSP to adopt the Safety Dashboard. This move signals a growing trend among ANSPs towards leveraging advanced technologies for improved safety outcomes. Aireon anticipates announcing additional customers in the near future and plans to expand its suite of operational data dashboards to include metrics on flight efficiency, fuel consumption and emissions, and deviations from flight plans.

The Safety Dashboard will be showcased at the upcoming Airspace World event in Geneva, Switzerland, offering attendees a firsthand look at this innovative tool. Aireon's space-based ADS-B surveillance system represents a significant leap forward in air traffic management. By extending surveillance capabilities to oceanic, polar, and remote regions previously uncovered by ground-based systems, Aireon is setting new standards in efficiency, safety, emissions reduction, and cost savings for the global aviation industry.

Aireon's collaborative efforts with industry partners such as NAV CANADA, AirNav Ireland, NATS, Iridium Communications, and others underscore its pivotal role in advancing global aviation safety and operational efficiency. As more ANSPs come on board with tools like the Safety Dashboard, the industry moves closer to achieving unparalleled levels of airspace safety and management.
