New AI Blood Test Can Predict Parkinson's Disease Up To Seven Years In Advance

A collaborative effort between researchers from University College London (UCL) and University Medical Center Goettingen has led to the development of a blood test that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict Parkinson's disease. This test can anticipate the disease up to seven years before symptoms become evident.

This innovative test examines a set of eight blood-based biomarkers that change in patients with Parkinson's. Impressively, it has exhibited a 100% accuracy rate in diagnosing the disease. The team trialed this test on 72 individuals with Rapid Eye Movement Behavior Disorder (iRBD), a condition that often precedes Parkinson's and other synucleinopathies. The findings are published in the journal Nature Communications.

Among the iRBD patients, the test identified 79% as having a profile similar to someone with Parkinson's. Over a span of 10 years, the AI predictions aligned with the actual clinical outcomes, accurately forecasting Parkinson's onset in 16 patients up to seven years before any symptoms emerged.

The research team intends to continue monitoring the individuals predicted to develop Parkinson's to further confirm the test's accuracy. Additionally, they aim to secure funding to create a simplified blood spot test, potentially capable of predicting the disease even earlier than the current seven-year anticipation.

This breakthrough offers a less invasive alternative to current diagnostic methods, such as lumbar punctures. The findings might also help distinguish Parkinson's from other conditions that exhibit similar early symptoms, thus aiding in more precise diagnoses.

The long-term goal is to validate and perhaps refine this AI-driven test further, ensuring it becomes a reliable tool in the early detection and differentiation of Parkinson's disease.

This research signifies a considerable milestone in the field of medical diagnostics, highlighting the potential of AI and blood-based biomarkers in early disease prediction.
