AECOM And Halcrow To Spearhead Development Of San Tin Technopole I&T City In Hong Kong
In a significant development for Hong Kong's urban landscape, AECOM, in collaboration with Halcrow China Limited, a Jacobs-owned entity, has been appointed by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the HKSAR Government to spearhead the San Tin Technopole city project. This initiative is a key component of the expansive Northern Metropolis development, covering a 610-hectare area. AECOM's responsibilities encompass a 250-hectare segment, where it will oversee a range of services including design, project supervision, and various engineering works.
The San Tin Technopole city is poised to become a beacon of innovation and technology development. It aims to offer housing, community and commercial facilities, alongside essential infrastructure. Ian Chung, AECOM's chief executive for the Asia region, expressed enthusiasm about continuing the firm's longstanding partnership with the HKSAR Government. He highlighted AECOM's comprehensive urban development expertise as a key factor in creating a sustainable community that fosters innovation and technological progress.

The joint venture between AECOM and Halcrow will manage several critical aspects of the project. These include design review, detailed design, tendering, construction supervision, and environmental monitoring. The Northern Metropolis, branded as an "International Innovation and Technology New City," seeks to blend quality living with industrial development and cultural leisure activities. It is strategically located near Shenzhen's Innovation and Technology Zone in Huangang and Futian, making San Tin Technopole a central figure in this ambitious project.
With an eye on sustainability, the project will incorporate an integrated low carbon infrastructure system focusing on waste management, energy efficiency, water management, smart mobility, and urban planning. Digital strategies like BIM (Building Information Modeling) and Digital Twins are also set to enhance project outcomes. The development is planned in two phases, with the first residents expected by 2031. Upon completion, it will provide approximately 54,000 new housing units.
