A-Gas Boosts Refrigerant Reclamation Capacity To Support US Circular Economy
A-Gas, a prominent global entity in the refrigerant gas supply and lifecycle management sector, recently announced the successful installation of new separation towers at their facility in Rhome, Texas. This development is set to significantly boost the company's capacity to provide the US market with high-quality reclaimed refrigerant gases, thereby enhancing the availability of these essential products. The completion of this project in late 2022 marks a significant milestone for A-Gas, following the construction of another set of refrigerant separation towers at their plant outside Dallas/Fort Worth.
Since 2017, A-Gas has achieved nearly a fourfold increase in separation capacity at the Texas facility. This expansion positions A-Gas as a leading figure in the US reclaimed refrigerant market and addresses a crucial need identified in the NGO report titled "The 90 Billion Ton Opportunity: Lifecycle Refrigerant Management." The report underscores the importance of expanding refrigerant gas recovery and reclamation efforts as part of implementing the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM Act), aligning with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

Mike Armstrong, Managing Director and President of A-Gas Americas, highlighted the project's significance, stating, "The completion of these two separators is another example of A-Gas’ deep commitment to increasing the circularity of refrigerants." He emphasized the necessity for American businesses, from large food retailers to small HVACR contractors, to have access to certified reclaimed refrigerant amidst the ongoing phase-down of virgin HFCs in the US.
The A-Gas facility not only boasts enhanced separation capabilities but also houses an AHRI-certified laboratory. This setup allows for the recovery and reclamation of even the most complex mixtures of refrigerants to be processed in accordance with AHRI-700 specifications. Taylor Ferranti, Commercial Vice President of Refrigerant Management at A-Gas, shared insights into the broader impact of these investments. "Investments in circular infrastructure in the United States create direct environmental and financial benefit in the American marketplace," he said, also noting the reduction in reliance on international sources for refrigerant supplies.
A-Gas is dedicated to supporting a circular economy by reprocessing and reclaiming used refrigerants to virgin product grade for future reuse. The company continues to source next-generation refrigerants to support their customers' needs. For over three decades, A-Gas has been at the forefront of supplying lower global warming potential gases and enhancing industry circularity, thereby contributing to a sustainable future.
