Zayed National Museum Reveals Eight Recipients Of AED 1 Million Research Fund For 2024
The Zayed National Museum has revealed the recipients of its 2024 Research Fund, aimed at supporting projects that delve into the UAE's history, culture, and heritage. Out of 79 applicants, eight researchers from countries including the UAE, Italy, India, and the USA were selected. These projects span various disciplines and topics to enhance understanding of the UAE and its region.
Chosen by a panel of experts, the research initiatives cover diverse subjects. They include organic residue analysis, an encyclopaedia of native trees in the UAE, modern architecture and landmarks in the UAE, pottery usage studies, and a digital preservation project for petroglyphs in the UAE.

Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, stated that "Zayed National Museum’s Research Fund exemplifies Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to learning about our past and fostering knowledge of the region’s history and culture." He highlighted that this fund not only aids researchers but also helps preserve both tangible and intangible heritage in the UAE.
Dr. Peter Magee, Director of Zayed National Museum, expressed pride in announcing this year's researchers after last year’s successful funding round. He noted that applications showcased a wide range of specialisms from archaeology to architecture. "I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the recipients," he said.
The Research Fund provides an annual allocation of AED1 million, making it one of the most substantial research funding opportunities in the region. The 2024 recipients include:
- Dr. Fatema Al Mazroui (UAE): Examining formal education history in Abu Dhabi through Qasr Al Hosn documents (1957–1966).
- Fatema Al Shehhi & Hessa Al Shehhi (UAE): Studying pottery shards from Ras Al Khaimah archaeological sites.
- Marwan AlFalasi (UAE): Creating an encyclopaedia on native trees in the UAE.
- Dr. Khaled Alawadi (UAE): Mapping modern architecture and landmarks in the UAE.
- Dr. Michele Degli Esposti (Italy): Investigating life and death in Southeast Arabia during the second millennium BC.
- Dr. Akshyeta Suryanarayan (India): Analysing long-term vessel use through organic residue study.
- Prof. Yasser Elsheshtawy (USA): Conducting a typo-morphological study on UAE National House.
- Dr. William Zimmerle (USA): Establishing a virtual centre for digital preservation of petroglyphs in Southern and Eastern Arabia.
Zayed National Museum's Mission
The Zayed National Museum Research Fund was launched in 2023 to support research enriching understanding of the UAE's cultural legacy. It aligns with preserving values contributed by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The museum aims to be a world-class research institution and authority on UAE history from ancient times to today.
