Veteran Photographers Unveil Key Elements For Exceptional Wildlife Photography

At the Xposure International Photography Festival 2024, held at Expo Centre Sharjah, renowned wildlife photographers Jonathan and Angela Scott shared their insights during a Focus Group talk titled ‘Redefining Photography’. The couple, known for their exceptional work in wildlife photography, especially with big cats in Kenya, emphasized the importance of access and time in capturing compelling photographs. Jonathan highlighted that gaining access to prime locations and spending ample time with the subject are crucial for producing high-quality images.

Angela Scott shared her experience of photographing a leopard for six years, illustrating the patience and dedication required to capture such intimate moments. The Scotts have dedicated their lives to wildlife photography, facing the challenges of a profession that has seen significant financial changes over the years. They noted a sharp decline in image payouts, from nearly $100 four decades ago to about a dollar today.

Secrets to Mastering Wildlife Photography

To navigate these financial challenges, the Scotts advocate for diversification. They have engaged in various activities such as conducting workshops, leading safaris, writing books, and appearing on television. Their long-standing role as brand ambassadors for Canon demonstrates their commitment to leveraging different avenues to support their passion for photography.

The couple also expressed concern over the current selfie culture and the obsession with social media validation. They lamented how today's travelers often miss out on truly experiencing nature due to their focus on capturing moments for online consumption. However, they see this as an opportunity to reconnect people with nature through photography. Their work, alongside their NGO efforts, aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving wildlife and natural habitats.

Jonathan and Angela Scott's message to aspiring photographers is clear: success in photography requires not just skill but also dedication to spending time in nature and understanding one's subjects deeply. Their careers exemplify how passion combined with perseverance can lead to a fulfilling engagement with wildlife photography despite the evolving challenges of the profession.
