University Of Sharjah's Spark17 Exhibition Showcases Innovative Student Projects In Media And Communication

The University of Sharjah's College of Communication recently held its 17th annual graduation project exhibition, Spark17, themed "Community Partnership." The event was graced by Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University, and Sarah Mooney, British Consul-General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, along with many academic and professional attendees.

Spark17 aligns with the University's aim to align academic achievements with market demands while encouraging collaboration with both local and international bodies. The exhibition displayed innovative projects by graduating students, showcasing their professional creativity in tackling challenges within the communication and media industry.

Spark17 Exhibition Highlights Student Innovations

The exhibition featured 48 graduation projects from 88 students across various specialisations: Public Relations (11 projects), Radio and Television (11 projects), Digital Media Design (16 projects), Digital Journalism (3 projects), and English Communication (8 projects). These were developed in partnership with local entities like Sharjah Media City (Shams) and the British Council.

Projects addressed diverse topics reflecting rapid media sector changes. Students focused on using modern technology and AI in content production and design, including virtual reality, live broadcasting, and digital design. They also tackled issues like sustainability, climate change management, women's leadership, volunteer culture promotion, and community service through media campaigns.

This year saw the British Embassy to the UAE as a guest of honour. The Embassy shared photographs highlighting British culture and film screenings from the British Council. Student graduation projects were later showcased at 06 Mall Cinema City.

Sarah Mooney expressed gratitude to the University for hosting the British delegation as a guest of honour. She emphasised the importance of such events in fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral relations. Mooney praised the quality of student projects for demonstrating a strong grasp of modern technologies.

Academic-Industry Collaboration

Prof. Jairo Lugo-Ocando, Dean of the College of Communication, stated that the exhibition is vital for showcasing students' capabilities and innovations. It enhances their practical experience and supports job market readiness through direct interaction with media decision-makers.

The University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Visionaires company during the exhibition to enhance cooperation in integrating AI-supported simulation technologies into academic programs. This agreement involves developing educational modules, training workshops for faculty members, and exploring joint research opportunities in entrepreneurship education.

Award Ceremony Highlights

The event concluded with an awards ceremony honouring sponsors, partners, and organising committees. Attendees included university vice chancellors, business community members, faculty, and students.

Dr. Salah Taher Al-Haj signed the memorandum on behalf of the University while Kunal Ougorah represented Visionaires as Founder and CEO. This collaboration aims to contribute to academic innovation by developing students' entrepreneurial skills.
