UNIDO's Riyadh Declaration Promotes Sustainable Industrial Development And SDGs

The 21st session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) took place in Saudi Arabia from November 23 to 27. During this event, representatives from over 170 countries endorsed the Riyadh Declaration. This declaration aims to enhance multilateral cooperation, boost industrial development, and speed up the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Riyadh Declaration outlines a global vision for inclusive and sustainable industrial growth. It highlights the importance of fair supply chains, innovation, and international partnerships. The declaration also emphasizes UNIDO's critical role in driving industrial transformation, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Member states have pledged to increase local manufacturing and value addition. They aim to support private investment in agro-processing and encourage innovation and technology transfer. These efforts are crucial for ensuring global food security and fostering robust economic growth.

The declaration reaffirms the international community's dedication to sustainable development and poverty eradication. It acknowledges that inclusive industrial development is essential for boosting productivity, expanding employment opportunities—especially for women and youth—and promoting strong economic growth.

A key recommendation of the declaration is exploring a sustainable international manufacturing platform. This platform would act as a global incubator for knowledge, innovative technologies, and investment opportunities. Its goal is to maximize value addition and encourage private sector involvement in large-scale industrial solutions.

The Riyadh Declaration calls on development partners to increase manufacturing support for Africa. It also seeks to strengthen international cooperation to address the needs of least developed countries, landlocked nations, small island developing states, and conflict-affected regions.

An initiative supported by the declaration is establishing an International Day of Women in Industry. This initiative aims to highlight women's contributions to industrial sectors worldwide.

By hosting the conference successfully and securing the adoption of the Riyadh Declaration, Saudi Arabia has reinforced its status as a global hub for shaping sustainable industrial development agendas. This marks a new phase where national initiatives align with international partnerships.
