UNESCO Welcomes Fujairah Into Its Global Network Of Learning Cities To Enhance Lifelong Learning

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has recently included Fujairah in its Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC). This addition highlights Fujairah's dedication to making education accessible for all ages. The network now comprises 425 cities from 91 countries, collectively supporting lifelong learning for nearly 500 million individuals.

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, UAE Minister of Culture, expressed that this achievement underscores the UAE's commitment to education and cultural development. He stated: "The emirate’s inclusion in the network stands as a testament to its strategic vision in expanding lifelong learning opportunities and cultivating a sustainable knowledge-based economy. It also underscores the enduring dedication of the UAE’s wise leadership to empowering communities through education excellence, innovation, and sustainability."

Fujairah Joins UNESCO Learning Cities Network

Fujairah's membership in the GNLC is attributed to its efforts in enhancing educational infrastructure and digital literacy. Mohammed Al Dhanhani, Director of the Fujairah Emiri Court, noted that these initiatives align with UAE Vision 2031 and the National Strategy for Education 2030. The recognition will bolster current learning initiatives and contribute to Fujairah's sustainable growth.

The Ministry of Culture played a crucial role in supporting Fujairah’s candidacy for GNLC membership through the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. This effort ensures alignment with UNESCO’s priorities and reinforces the UAE’s proactive role in global learning and cultural exchange.

Under H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi's patronage, several initiatives contribute significantly to lifelong learning in Fujairah. These include Majlis Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Fujairah’s Young Techpreneurs, and the Fujairah Children’s Book Fair. These programs enhance civic engagement and foster intergenerational learning.

The Young Techpreneurs initiative aims to equip children aged 7-15 with skills in programming and artificial intelligence. Launched in collaboration with Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University in 2025, it focuses on preparing youth for future challenges. Additionally, the Fujairah Children’s Book Fair promotes literacy through workshops and storytelling sessions.

Sustainability and Health Initiatives

Fujairah also emphasises sustainability through projects like the Wadi Wurayah Protected Area Education Programme. This initiative engages students in biodiversity studies and conservation efforts. The Together We Move campaign offers free fitness classes and wellness workshops to promote health among residents.

Equity is advanced through programs such as the Year of Tolerance in schools, promoting intercultural dialogue. Vocational training is provided for individuals with disabilities or low-income families via community centres and digital platforms.

Linking Education with Employment

The Chamber of Commerce runs a Business Incubation Programme focusing on essential skills training. The Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi Leadership Programme develops public-sector capabilities while entrepreneurial clubs encourage youth business planning. These efforts ensure technical education aligns with local labour market needs.

Gender equality is promoted by ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for both women and men through initiatives by the Fujairah Businesswomen Council and Research Center.

Stefania Giannini from UNESCO highlighted that new Learning Cities are redefining education by turning everyday spaces into places for knowledge sharing. She noted that prioritising education empowers people at all stages of life.

Fujairah's Learning City Project envisions a future where lifelong learning drives sustainable development. Medium-term goals include strengthening educational infrastructure while long-term objectives focus on establishing Fujairah as a regional leader in lifelong learning.
