UN Warns Of Severe Humanitarian Crisis In Lebanon Due To Ongoing Conflict And Attacks On Healthcare

The United Nations has raised alarms about Lebanon's current situation, stating it surpasses the severity of the 2006 conflict. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric highlighted the ongoing attacks on healthcare facilities, staff, and resources, exacerbating Lebanon's already fragile health system. The healthcare sector is under immense pressure due to these relentless assaults.

Recent Israeli airstrikes near Tibnin Government Hospital in Nabatiyeh's Bint Jbeil district have caused significant damage and injured many individuals. This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence affecting healthcare infrastructure across Lebanon. The World Health Organisation reported that 110 healthcare workers have died while performing their duties in the country.

UN Warns of Humanitarian Crisis in Lebanon

Over the past 13 months, there have been at least 60 attacks on healthcare facilities in Lebanon. These incidents highlight the dire situation facing medical services amid ongoing conflicts. Dujarric condemned the increasing loss of life due to Israeli aggression, clashes in southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah's drone and rocket attacks on Israel.

"All actors must adhere to international law and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure," Dujarric stated. He stressed the importance of safeguarding non-combatants and essential services during this period of heightened tension. The UN continues to call for adherence to international humanitarian standards.

The Palestine refugee relief agency UNRWA has been active in delivering medical supplies and fuel for generators to the Burj Shimali Palestinian refugee camp in Tyre. UNICEF has also provided emergency supplies to displaced individuals in other parts of Tyre, demonstrating international efforts to support those affected by the conflict.

A humanitarian convoy distributed food and hygiene kits to displaced people in shelters within Baalbek-Hermel over the weekend. Additionally, another convoy delivered medical supplies to Labweh's primary healthcare centre on Monday, aiming to alleviate some of the immediate needs arising from the crisis.

Dujarric concluded by urging all parties involved to cease hostilities immediately. "We urge the parties to halt the violence immediately. The United Nations continues to support efforts towards a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution," he emphasised. The UN remains committed to facilitating peace talks and finding a diplomatic resolution to end the violence in Lebanon.
