UN-OIC Cooperation Essential For Advancing Peace And Stability, States UN Official To Security Council
The collaboration between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is crucial for global peace and security, according to Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific. He emphasised that in today's complex geopolitical landscape, working with regional organisations like the OIC is essential. This partnership aligns with Chapter VIII of the UN Charter and is a priority for the Secretary-General.
In the Middle East, both organisations aim for a lasting solution to the Palestine issue. Recently, they held a joint conference on Jerusalem in Dakar on 9 July. The UN values the OIC and League of Arab States' support for Gaza's Recovery and Reconstruction Plan through their Joint Ministerial Committee. This plan strengthens efforts for a fair resolution based on relevant UN resolutions.

Khiari acknowledged the OIC's role in tackling global issues that cross borders. He highlighted Islamophobia as a pressing concern affecting many worldwide. The OIC's leadership in addressing religious intolerance is appreciated by the UN. "The United Nations stands against all forms of hatred and discrimination, and firmly believes that diversity in all its forms only makes societies stronger," he stated.
The upcoming Ministerial Meeting co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia aims to support the two-State solution. This meeting will underscore international agreement on these objectives and reaffirm principles supporting this solution. Khiari noted its significance in reinforcing global consensus around these goals.
The UN recently appointed Miguel Moratinos as Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, demonstrating its commitment to addressing this issue alongside the OIC and other partners. This appointment reflects a determination to intensify efforts against religious intolerance globally.
Khiari concluded by expressing appreciation for the OIC’s cooperation in addressing challenges beyond borders. The partnership between these organisations remains vital in promoting peace and security worldwide.
