UAE's First Palliative Care Conference Highlights Importance Of Compassionate End-of-Life Care For Patients

Burjeel Holdings recently organised the UAE's inaugural Palliative Care Conference in Abu Dhabi to highlight the significance of palliative care in enhancing the quality of life for patients with severe illnesses. Supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), this two-day event attracted nearly 500 attendees in person and over 3,000 online participants.

The conference served as a crucial platform for healthcare professionals to expand their knowledge of palliative care. It aimed to demonstrate how alleviating health-related suffering can significantly improve the lives of those with serious conditions. The event featured plenary sessions led by prominent figures in palliative care, including M.R. Rajagopal, a multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominee and a pioneer from India.

UAE Hosts First Palliative Care Conference

Dr. Rajagopal, in his keynote speech, emphasised the necessity of compassionate care based on his three decades of experience. He stated, "Every healthcare provider has a responsibility to reduce suffering. Palliative care should be integrated into all healthcare practices, with providers applying its principles in every aspect of care. This includes alleviating pain and other symptoms, while also offering psychological and social support to enhance the overall well-being of patients."

The conference also included presentations from Dr. Joy Ross from London on hospice care's history and societal benefits, and Prof. Justin Baker, an expert in pediatric palliative care, who discussed caring for children with life-limiting conditions. A particularly poignant session involved a healthcare professional from Gaza sharing experiences of providing palliative care in conflict zones.

A significant highlight was Burjeel Holdings' announcement of plans to establish an advanced hospice palliative care centre in the UAE. Dr. Neil Arun Nijhawan, Conference Chair and Consultant Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Burjeel Cancer Institute, stated: "Burjeel Holdings is committed to developing a hospice that will offer patients and families the highest levels of palliative care, ensuring dignity and relief from suffering at every stage of illness. We envision a future where palliative care is an integral part of healthcare services across the UAE."

The speaker lineup included experts from various countries such as the UAE, India, UK, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. They covered diverse topics ranging from advocacy for palliative care to nursing roles and international experiences.

Expanding Roles in Palliative Nursing

In addition to expert discussions, there was a strong focus on advocating for specialised roles within palliative nursing during the conference. This emphasis highlighted the growing need for dedicated professionals who can provide comprehensive support to patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

The conference underscored Burjeel Holdings' commitment to advancing palliative care services within the region by fostering collaboration among global experts and local practitioners.
