UAE Contributes AED 1 Million To Enhance LDCs' Participation In WTO MC13
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made a significant financial contribution to support the participation of government officials from least-developed countries (LDCs) in the 13th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference (MC13). The conference, scheduled from 26th to 29th February in Abu Dhabi, has seen the UAE donate AED1 million (CHF 240,000) towards covering travel expenses, including flight tickets and accommodation for these officials. This generous donation was made to the LDCs Trust Fund, a dedicated fund established for each Ministerial Conference to facilitate the involvement of multiple WTO members.
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the importance of inclusive trade negotiations, stating, "One reason multilateral trade negotiations are so valuable is that they bring all countries' voices to the table." She expressed gratitude towards the UAE for its contribution, emphasizing that it ensures LDC governments can be effective participants at MC13. This inclusivity is seen as essential for fostering discussions that can lead to outcomes improving lives globally.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade and MC13 Chair, echoed the sentiment of inclusivity and responsibility towards empowering LDCs in global trade. He remarked on the importance of providing necessary support and assistance to ensure all nations have a voice and opportunity in shaping the future of global trade. "Empowering least-developed countries to fully participate in the WTO and global trade is an investment for a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous world for all," he stated.
The UAE's financial assistance to LDCs for their participation in MC13 underscores a broader commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where every WTO member can contribute effectively. This approach not only enhances the quality of discussions but also ensures that decisions taken are reflective of a diverse range of perspectives and needs. As Abu Dhabi hosts this significant event, the global trading community is reminded of the importance of coming together to support all members, particularly those from least-developed countries.
