UAE Achieves Significant Progress In Combating Human Trafficking, According To UN Official

The United Arab Emirates has been praised for its efforts in tackling human trafficking. Dr. Mohannad Fayez Salim Aldweikat from the UNODC highlighted the UAE's progress at a seminar by Dubai Police on 30th July. He noted the UAE's ratification of key international agreements, including the UN Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime and its protocols, particularly focusing on trafficking prevention.

The UAE has implemented national laws to combat human trafficking, aligning with international protocols. These laws protect victims' rights and impose strict penalties on offenders. The country also promotes cooperation at national and regional levels to prevent such crimes effectively. The seminar discussed how AI and big data can help authorities identify traffickers and patterns in this cross-border crime.

UAE's Progress Against Human Trafficking Praised

Dr. Aldweikat emphasised the importance of practical solutions alongside strong institutional frameworks. He commended the UAE for forming the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and implementing a comprehensive national strategy. This includes establishing specialised courts, public prosecution units, police task forces, and trained labour inspectors to strengthen the rule of law.

In collaboration with Dubai Police's Human Rights Department, a specialised diploma in combating human trafficking was developed. Over 754 participants from across the Arab world have graduated from this program. Top graduates received train-the-trainer courses to lead regional training initiatives as experts for the UNODC.

Major General Dr. Saleh Abdullah Murad opened the event by highlighting human trafficking as a pressing crime that threatens societal values. He stressed that addressing this issue requires collective efforts from institutions and individuals, especially given challenges posed by modern technologies and organised crime.

Support for Victims

The UAE prioritises victim support, recognising that most victims are women and children. Dubai Police launched the ‘Victim Support’ Service within their smart application to provide quick access to legal, psychological, or social support for trafficking victims. This service enhances rights protection while ensuring a dignified response aligned with shared human values.

Dr. Murad noted that Dubai Police collaborates with various entities like the Ministry of Interior and UNODC to implement impactful initiatives at all levels. Their goal is to maintain the UAE as a safe haven where everyone enjoys legally guaranteed rights, setting an example for both regional and global communities.

Commitment to Human Rights

The UAE's commitment to combating human trafficking is evident through pioneering legislation, institutional initiatives, and international partnerships. The establishment of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and Law No. 24 in 2023 further align with international standards, reflecting a strong dedication to upholding human rights.

Dr. Aldweikat concluded by acknowledging shelters across all emirates for victim protection, managed by skilled professionals trained according to human rights standards and UN criteria. These efforts underscore the UAE's belief that victims are central to addressing migration challenges.
