UAE Advocates For Stronger Global Governance At G20 Meeting In Brazil
Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State and the UAE Sherpa to the G20 process, recently spearheaded the UAE delegation at the first G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of 2024. This significant gathering aimed to deliberate on the Group's pivotal role in mitigating ongoing global tensions and spearheading essential reforms within the international governance framework. The UAE's presence at this meeting marks its third consecutive invitation as a guest country, underscoring its growing influence and active participation in global dialogues.
The 2024 meeting, hosted under the auspices of the Brazilian presidency, revolves around the theme "Building a Just World and Sustainable Planet". Brazil's leadership has outlined key priorities for the G20, emphasizing the development of an international governance system, the battle against hunger and poverty, climate change mitigation, and facilitating energy transitions. Al Sayegh, during his intervention, highlighted the critical challenges facing the world today, including geopolitical conflicts, economic disparities, and environmental crises, advocating for a unified and multilateral approach to these issues.

Al Sayegh further elaborated on the UAE’s proactive role in advancing G20 priorities, particularly noting its contributions towards COVID-19 recovery efforts, climate action, energy transition, and sustainable development goals. He reaffirmed the UAE's support for Brazil's set priorities for the G20 and underscored the importance of building on the achievements of COP28. The conference, held in the UAE, was notable for its successful agenda, securing over USD 85 billion in financial commitments and launching several significant pledges and declarations.
Moreover, Al Sayegh expressed the UAE’s urgent call for an end to violence and protection of civilians in Gaza, alongside ensuring open humanitarian corridors for aid delivery. This stance reflects the UAE's commitment to addressing immediate global crises alongside long-term sustainability goals.
The UAE's engagement in G20 meetings since its first participation in 2011 demonstrates its steadfast commitment to contributing to global discussions on pressing issues. With previous participations in India (2023), Indonesia (2022), Saudi Arabia (2020), and France (2011), the UAE continues to solidify its position as a key player in international diplomacy and governance reform efforts.
This active involvement not only highlights the UAE’s dedication to fostering global cooperation but also positions it as a significant contributor to shaping a sustainable and equitable future for all. As global challenges persist, the UAE’s role within forums like the G20 becomes increasingly vital in driving forward collective action and innovative solutions for a just world and sustainable planet.
