UAE Concludes Successful Participation At The 75th International Astronautical Congress In Milan
The UAE successfully wrapped up its participation in the 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milan, Italy, held from 14th to 18th October, 2024. This year marked the first time the UAE featured a dedicated space pavilion, showcasing significant milestones and projects in its national space sector. The pavilion emphasised the UAE's leadership in space innovation and sustainability.
Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, stated, "The International Astronautical Congress offered a pioneering platform to consolidate the UAE’s global position in space exploration. It provided us with the opportunity to connect with key international decision-makers and industry leaders, helping to advance our efforts to build a knowledge-based economy and contribute to sustainable development. This event plays a significant role in realising our long-term, future goals in space exploration and further driving scientific and technological progress, in line with the UAE’s leadership’s vision to ensure the sustainable development of this vital sector over the next 50 years."

The UAE Space Pavilion attracted over 4,000 visitors, including astronauts, scientists, and officials from various space agencies worldwide. This turnout highlights growing global interest in the UAE's achievements in space. The pavilion also received the "Best Design" award at IAC 2024.
Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director-General of the UAE Space Agency, remarked on their participation: "Our presence at the IAC 2024 provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the UAE’s space initiatives and achievements to a global audience. It also highlighted our contributions to international space programmes and our ambitious national projects in satellite development. Furthermore, we demonstrated the important role of space technologies in sectors such as communications, environmental sustainability, and broader economic development. Our participation in international events is a key pillar of our strategy to consolidate the UAE’s position as a leading player and contribute to shaping the future of the global space sector."
During IAC 2024, Emirati experts presented 15 scientific papers and conducted over 20 sessions on various topics related to space exploration. The event also facilitated signing five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening strategic collaborations for future projects.
Salem Humaid Al Marri from Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre noted: "As we successfully conclude the 75th International Astronautical Congress in Milan, the UAE Space Pavilion... has further solidified our nation’s position as a key player in the global space sector... By fostering global partnerships... reinforcing the UAE’s role in shaping a more innovative and interconnected space ecosystem."
Showcasing Advanced Projects
The pavilion showcased major projects like Emirates Mission to Asteroid Belt and MBZ-SAT satellite. It also highlighted initiatives such as Space Data Centre and Geospatial Analytics Platform. These presentations underscored ongoing advancements within UAE's ambitious national projects.
Ali Al Shehhi from NSSTC stated: "Our presence at IAC 2024 within... reflects our unwavering dedication... By presenting our cutting-edge projects... underscore our role... This platform enables us to build enduring partnerships that will fuel both regional and international advancements..."
Engagements with International Partners
The congress provided opportunities for Emirati officials like Dr. Al Falasi to engage with international counterparts through meetings such as Artemis Accords meeting. These discussions focused on promoting sustainable practices for peaceful use of outer space.
Dr Elias Tsoutsanis from TII shared insights: "At IAC Milan... presented over six scientific papers... advancing future of space exploration... pushing boundaries of innovation..." His remarks reflect ongoing efforts towards technological progress within this field.
Unified Commitment Toward Space Science
The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy participated actively alongside other organisations like MBRSC at IAC 2024. Prof Hamid Al Naimiy expressed pride stating: "On behalf SAASST University Sharjah honoured part International Astronautical Congress Milan presence reflects nation unified commitment advancing science fostering collaborations."
The pavilion brought together public-private entities including Dubai Airshow team highlighting future opportunities available during upcoming events scheduled December next year Abu Dhabi Debate followed by Dubai Airshow slated take place year after.
Astronauts Dr Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi Hazzaa AlMansoori engaged visitors sharing unique experiences milestones achieved by country raising awareness importance national industry fundamental pillar sustainable development.
