UAE Engages In 116th Arab Economic And Social Council Meeting In Cairo To Enhance Regional Cooperation

The UAE took part in the 116th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council, held at the Arab League's headquarters in Cairo from August 31 to September 3, 2025. This session, chaired by Tunisia, brought together delegations from member states to discuss enhancing Arab cooperation in economic and social sectors. Key topics included sustainable development plans and regional and international issues of high priority.

Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, led the UAE delegation. He highlighted that under its leadership, the UAE is dedicated to shaping and implementing initiatives that promote Arab economic integration. "The session represents an important milestone in aligning positions and coordinating joint efforts toward achieving comprehensive development across the region," he stated.

The Council explored the next phase of the Arab joint economic action programme. This includes removing customs barriers, completing requirements for the Arab Customs Union, and activating GAFTA. Additionally, discussions covered developing transportation networks among Arab states and promoting entrepreneurship through joint financing initiatives and training programs.

On a social level, several initiatives were examined to support public health programmes and broaden educational initiatives that develop future-ready skills. The Council also discussed strengthening cultural and media collaboration among member states to empower women and youth in the labour market. The Arab strategy for empowering people with determination was also reviewed, aligning with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Al Saleh emphasised that agenda items address regional priorities amid international shifts. These include enhancing intra-Arab trade, strengthening food and water security, improving investment climates, advancing digital transformation, and empowering youth and women for inclusive development in Arab societies.

Strengthening Organisational Capacity

"The UAE attaches great importance to the development of Arab organisations," Al Saleh noted. These organisations are seen as centres of expertise providing specialised knowledge to member states. This commitment follows a resolution from a previous session to form an expert task force based on a UAE working paper aimed at boosting organisational efficiency.

The Council reviewed follow-up reports on resolutions from past summits and sessions. They examined progress on joint economic and social issues, priority projects, initiatives, and partnerships between Arab organisations with international bodies. This review aimed at strengthening their capacity to support development priorities.

The meeting underscored the importance of aligning positions among member states for comprehensive regional development. By focusing on both economic integration and social empowerment initiatives, it aims to foster a collaborative environment conducive to growth across various sectors.
