UAE Highlights Commitment To Energy And Water Cooperation At GCC Meeting In Qatar

The UAE, through its Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), took part in the 31st Meeting of the GCC Electricity and Water Cooperation Committee in Doha, Qatar. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, emphasised the committee's role in boosting cooperation and integration within the energy and water sectors among GCC nations.

Al Olama stressed that the UAE is dedicated to fostering regional synergies to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address future demands. He stated, "The integration of the energy and water sectors of GCC countries is a leading example of productive collaboration in the face of common challenges. The UAE continues to adopt innovative, sustainable energy and water solutions and develop world-class infrastructure, as part of its vibrant role as a contributor to the progress and prosperity of GCC peoples."

He further highlighted that with global energy challenges on the rise, it is crucial for all parties to collaborate on a roadmap for electricity sectors. The aim is to enhance cooperation in electricity and water sectors to deliver these resources efficiently at competitive prices. This strategy seeks to position the UAE as an appealing investment hub in these vital sectors.

Al Olama also pointed out that collaboration among GCC countries strengthens water security. This is particularly important given that these nations are located in some of the world's driest regions. He noted that water security remains a significant challenge for these countries.

The UAE has made significant strides in conserving water resources through pioneering projects like desalination plants. The country primarily depends on wastewater treatment facilities for irrigation needs. There are over 140 such plants, including those operated by private entities, with a total capacity of 3 million cubic meters daily. These facilities produce 768 million cubic meters of treated wastewater annually for urban landscape irrigation.
