UAE Parliamentary Division Advocates For Comprehensive UN Reforms Emphasising Peace And Sustainability

The Federal National Council's Parliamentary Division has urged for significant reforms within the United Nations system. They emphasised that success should be gauged by advancements in peace, security, sustainable development, and humanitarian aid, rather than budget cuts. This call was made during Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi's participation in the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva.

Al Muhairi took part in discussions at the Committee on United Nations Affairs and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians. He highlighted that the UN’s 80th anniversary is a crucial moment to boost its effectiveness and adapt to global challenges. Transparent and inclusive reforms, he noted, would strengthen trust in the UN system.

UAE Calls for UN Reforms on Peace and Sustainability

In another session focused on electing the UN Secretary-General, Al Muhairi expressed the UAE’s respect for the UN’s pivotal role in tackling global issues. He stated that selecting a Secretary-General should adhere to three principles: following the UN Charter, mediating and leading independently, and having a clear vision for addressing challenges like climate change and digital transformation.

The UAE Parliamentary Division suggested enhancing this election process by setting clear timelines and requiring candidates to publish their vision statements. They also advocated for greater involvement from parliaments and civil society, along with empowering qualified women leaders through fair opportunities.

Al Muhairi stressed that national parliaments play a vital role in ensuring government commitment to adequate funding for the UN. They also promote accountability while balancing financial efficiency with humanitarian goals. This approach aims to reinforce confidence in the UN system.

He further emphasised that reforms should be carried out transparently and inclusively to maintain trust. The focus should remain on enhancing the organisation’s ability to address global challenges effectively.

The discussions underscored that reforming the UN is essential for it to remain relevant and effective. The emphasis was on ensuring these changes are ambitious yet practical, aligning with both current needs and future demands.
