UAE Obstacle Sports Federation Established To Enhance Competitive Sports Landscape
The UAE Ministry of Sports has launched the UAE Obstacle Sports Federation, tasked with organising and promoting obstacle sports in the country. This initiative aims to elevate the sport's profile by showcasing its competitive aspects, which blend physical fitness, endurance, and mental skills. The federation's creation is a step towards gaining international recognition for these sports.
Obstacle sports are gaining traction globally, with activities like OCR, Adventure, Ninja, Callisthenics, and Obstacle Racing being practised in over 77 countries. Within Asia alone, 30 nations participate in these sports under four federations linked to the International Obstacle Sports Federation based in Switzerland.

Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, expressed his support for the Federation’s Board of Directors led by Abdulrahman Abu Al Shawareb. He emphasised that establishing the federation is crucial for enhancing the UAE’s sports sector. This aligns with efforts to diversify national sports and provide athletes with new competition opportunities while encouraging community involvement for a healthier society.
The Ministry of Sports is dedicated to aiding the federation in creating an advanced organisational framework. This includes identifying and nurturing talent and hosting international events to boost the UAE's global sports reputation. Dr Al Falasi highlighted that integrating this sport into school and university games is a priority to cultivate future athletes capable of excelling in various disciplines.
Abdulrahman Abu Al Shawareb, President of the UAE Obstacle Sports Federation, expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Sports and Dr Al Falasi. He stated: "We are deeply honoured by the trust placed in us to lead the Federation following its official establishment. We look forward to building a comprehensive institutional framework that promotes obstacle sports across all segments of Emirati society."
The federation plans to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Sports and other stakeholders to organise tournaments at local, regional, and international levels according to global standards. Abu Al Shawareb mentioned that they aim to strengthen ties with regional federations and FISO for strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange.
Growing Popularity Across Regions
In recent years, obstacle sports have witnessed significant growth in the UAE. Last year alone saw 52 registered events nationwide. Approximately 9,000 citizens and residents actively engage in these activities. This surge in interest prompted the establishment of a national federation to oversee its development.
Dubai hosted the World Obstacle Championship in December 2024 at Dubai Police Officer’s Club and Dubai Design District (D3). Organised by Dubai Police, this event attracted considerable public attention and international praise due to its excellent organisation and fierce competition.
Regional Expansion
The popularity of obstacle sports is spreading across the Gulf and Arab regions as well. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Kuwait, and Bahrain have set up national federations dedicated to advancing these sports within their borders.
Obstacle races challenge athletes with natural or artificial barriers they must overcome quickly. Competitions cater to male, female, mixed categories across individual races or teams of two or four participants.
This growing interest underscores a broader movement towards embracing diverse sporting activities within these regions.
