UAE Celebrates Over 20,000 Employees in Nuclear and Radiation Sector

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently celebrated a significant milestone, acknowledging the contributions of over 20,000 professionals in the nuclear and radiation sector. This achievement underscores the nation's commitment to fostering a future-oriented workforce, as highlighted by Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The observance of the annual Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers on February 16th took on added importance this year. It marked the third anniversary of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) issuing the first operating licence for Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on February 16, 2020. This event is a cornerstone in the UAE's ambitious nuclear energy plans.

UAE's Nuclear Sector Hits 20K Employees

Ambassador Al Kaabi emphasized that employing more than 20,000 individuals in this sector is a reflection of the UAE's pioneering spirit and its substantial investments in empowering future generations. The celebration of this special day is a gesture of appreciation for the workers' qualitative contributions that have bolstered the UAE's leadership and position globally.

Al Kaabi expressed hope for continued growth in the sector through further scientific and technological achievements. He stressed the importance of science, technology, research, and development as foundational elements of the nuclear and radiation sector. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing efforts to develop human resources and infrastructure related to these fields.

The diversity in applications of nuclear and radiation technology across various sectors, including health, diagnostics, industry, agriculture, security, and defence, was also noted by Al Kaabi. He specifically mentioned the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant as a key component in reinforcing the UAE's regional and global leadership in this critical sector.

The establishment of Professional Day for Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers follows a Cabinet approval in January 2023. This decision commemorates the issuance of the operating licence for Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant by FANR and acknowledges the dedicated efforts towards developing the UAE's Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme.

This recognition not only celebrates past achievements but also aims to motivate workers in these vital sectors by showcasing their accomplishments to the community. It highlights the UAE's strategic approach to sustainable development and societal safety and security through advanced nuclear technology and its applications.
