UAE Ministry Of Economy Advocates For Stronger IP Rights In Creative Industries

The Ministry of Economy (MoEc) recently spearheaded a series of events to commemorate World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, observed under the theme "IP and SGDs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity". This initiative underscores the pivotal role of IP protection in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a priority that aligns with the UAE's focus across all sectors, especially the economic sphere. The events highlighted the UAE's proactive stance in crafting a legislative and regulatory framework that champions IP rights and bolsters innovators and entrepreneurs, adhering to international best practices.

Abdullah Al Saleh, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, reflected on the UAE's strides in establishing a premier legal framework for IP. This framework, which meets global standards, underscores the significance of knowledge and creativity as drivers of economic growth. The UAE has introduced three laws focused on the regulation and protection of industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and neighbouring rights. Additionally, an integrated system comprising 11 initiatives has been launched to cover all aspects of intellectual property applications. These measures are in sync with the nation’s vision to evolve into an innovative and knowledge-based economy while promoting research and development.

UAE Boosts IP Rights in Creativity

Al Saleh elaborated on how these initiatives have significantly contributed to creating a national environment that encourages intellectual property, innovation, and patents. In the past year alone, MoEc received 3,415 patent registration applications, marking a 19.5 per cent increase compared to 2022. This surge has led to over 5,000 patents being registered in the country.

"MoEc actively participates in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day as it presents an invaluable opportunity to highlight the essential role of intellectual property in bolstering and sustaining the national economy," Al Saleh stated. He emphasized the UAE and MoEc's dedication to providing support and opportunities for talented individuals and innovators, aiding in transforming their ideas into profitable business ventures. This effort is crucial for supporting the private sector and fostering sustainable economic practices. It also aligns with this year's IP Day theme by acknowledging the importance of innovation and intellectual property in driving economic trends forward.

As part of World IP Day 2024 celebrations from April 22nd to 30th, MoEc organized various seminars, workshops, and competitions designed to enhance understanding of national laws and regulations related to intellectual works and how to protect creative works. These activities aimed at reinforcing the significance of patents in science and technology fields while encouraging a shift towards sustainability in intellectual endeavors.

World IP Day is celebrated globally on April 26th each year, uniting countries, organizations, and institutions involved in intellectual property matters. Initiated by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in 1970—coinciding with its establishment—the day aims to raise awareness about the importance of IP rights. It also serves as a platform to educate on various aspects of intellectual property including trademarks, patents, industrial designs, copyright, and creative industries.
