UAE Media Sector Shapes Its Future Through Key Initiatives And Events In 2024
The UAE's media sector strengthened its influence in 2024 by producing impactful content and empowering professionals. A series of decisions, initiatives, and events shaped the industry's future. The National Media Office (NMO) played a key role in enhancing the UAE’s media presence locally and regionally through various forums and participations, reflecting the country's global standing.
In March, the ninth Emirati Media Forum (EMF) took place in the UAE, focusing on the connection between media and the economy. Dubai Media Incorporated launched the "Dubai Media Academy" to nurture young media professionals' skills. Additionally, the Dubai Media Council introduced the "Emirati Media Talent Pledge" to develop national media talent with private sector collaboration.

The Global Media Congress was a pivotal event organised by ADNEC Group in partnership with Emirates News Agency (WAM). It attracted 25,567 visitors and featured 96 panel discussions on major media trends. Four keynote sessions from global experts were also part of this event, which aimed at shaping the future of media under the theme "Vision, Empowerment, Interaction."
The UAE hosted several significant events to empower its media sector. These included the "Media and National Responsibility Forum" and a forum for Emirati media pioneers. Both were organised by the National Media Office under Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed's leadership. The office also participated in regional meetings to address global changes and anticipate future challenges.
In May, during the 27th GCC Information Ministers Meeting in Doha, Qatar, the UAE proposed establishing a unified information database for Gulf Cooperation Council countries. They also suggested a comprehensive study on AI’s future impact on media. In December, they hosted the 20th session of the Executive Office of Arab Information Ministers Council to focus on regional cooperation amid political and economic challenges.
The UAE participated in an extraordinary session of the Islamic Conference of Information Ministers held by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, Türkiye. Led by NMO Chairman Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, this session highlighted international cooperation's importance to resolve Palestine's humanitarian crisis.
Empowering Content Creators
The "1 Billion Followers Summit" was a notable event in 2024, drawing over 7,000 participants from 95 countries. More than 3,000 content creators with over 1.6 billion followers attended. The summit generated over 300 million social media interactions and established numerous partnerships between creators and over 200 production companies.
The Dubai Press Club launched an innovative initiative called the "Arab Podcast Programme." This programme is unique in its aim to foster audio content creation growth across the Arab world while nurturing content creators' skills.
Regional Forums and Markets
Sharjah hosted IGCF 2024's 13th edition with over 250 renowned experts participating. Meanwhile, Dubai International Content Market's seventh edition attracted more than 800 professionals from 50 countries. It featured 87 exhibitors representing significant media institutions and global distribution companies.
A study released by NMO in collaboration with Trends Research & Advisory explored AI's role in media regulation. This study examined both challenges and opportunities AI presents for today's industry landscape.
The UAE's strategic initiatives have significantly contributed to strengthening its position within regional and global media landscapes throughout this year.
