UAE Champions Nuclear Energy For Sustainable Development At Brussels Summit
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, spearheaded the UAE delegation at the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels, Belgium. This significant event, a collaborative effort between the Belgian government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), marks a pivotal moment for nuclear energy discussions on a global scale. The UAE's involvement underscores the international trust in its rapid and effective advancements in nuclear energy projects, setting a benchmark for nations venturing into this sector.
During the summit, Al Mazrouei engaged in strategic discussions with key global figures including Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs; Marisa Lago, U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy; and Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General. These meetings, attended by Mohamed Al Sahlawi, UAE Ambassador to Belgium, the EU, and Luxembourg, and Hamad Ali Al Kaabi, UAE's IAEA Permanent Representative, highlighted the UAE's commitment to fostering clean energy technologies worldwide.

The summit's co-chairs, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, emphasized the event's timing following nuclear energy's inclusion in the Global Stocktake at COP28 in Dubai. This historic decision calls for an accelerated deployment of nuclear power alongside other low-carbon energy sources to combat climate change. The summit saw over 25 countries pledge to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
Leaders from 32 countries supported initiatives to enhance nuclear capacity through financing, innovation in technology, regulatory cooperation, and workforce training. The commitment includes constructing new nuclear facilities and deploying advanced reactors such as small modular reactors globally while ensuring utmost safety and security standards.
The declaration from the summit reflects a unified stance on nuclear energy as a crucial element in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across power and industrial sectors. It emphasizes the role of nuclear power in ensuring energy security, enhancing resilience, and supporting sustainable development and clean energy transitions. The leaders pledged to facilitate both public and private investments in nuclear projects, including extending the life of existing reactors and constructing new ones.
This gathering of world leaders at the Nuclear Energy Summit signifies a collective move towards embracing nuclear energy as a vital component of the global strategy against climate change. With commitments to expand nuclear capacity and innovate within the sector, the summit sets a forward-looking agenda for sustainable development powered by clean energy.
