UAE Launches TAHYAA To Train Thousands In Nuclear And Radiological Emergency Response
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has introduced the National Programme for Qualifying Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers (TAHYAA). This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Interior, aims to enhance Emirati expertise in handling nuclear or radiological emergencies across various sectors in the UAE.
TAHYAA plans to train nearly 3,000 emergency workers from July 2024 to June 2025. These workers include first responders from Civil Defence, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence, and other relevant agencies. The programme is grounded in the UAE National Qualification for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers, developed by FANR with the National Qualification Centre (NQC) of the Ministry of Education.

The qualification framework encompasses diverse topics such as radiation physics, radiation detection, and radioactive decontamination. It provides official certification to all personnel involved in nuclear and radiological emergency response and management within the UAE.
TAHYAA is part of the performance agreements for 2023-2024, focusing on national priorities and meeting future development needs. It aligns with the "We the UAE 2031" vision, which aspires to make the UAE the safest country globally. This project is expected to significantly bolster national capacity to manage any potential nuclear or radiological emergencies.
Christer Viktorsson, Director-General of FANR, stated: "Building and strengthening the capacity of the emergency workers is a key element to ensure the timely response to any emergency to ensure the protection of the people and the environment. The National Programme for Qualifying Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Workers (TAHYAA) will play a key role in building such capacity in collaboration with our partners and harnessing their relevant hands-on experience to equip them with the necessary tools to address any nuclear or radiological emergency."
International Recognition
The UAE's emergency preparedness system has received praise from international bodies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). TAHYAA is anticipated to further enhance this robust system by developing national capabilities to handle nuclear or radiological crises effectively.
This comprehensive approach ensures that emergency workers are well-prepared with practical skills and knowledge. The collaboration between FANR and various ministries underscores a unified effort towards maintaining safety and security in nuclear-related matters.
The initiative reflects a commitment to continuous improvement in emergency response strategies. By equipping workers with essential qualifications, TAHYAA aims to safeguard both people and the environment against potential threats.
The launch of TAHYAA marks a significant step towards achieving long-term safety goals outlined in national development plans. Through rigorous training programmes, it seeks to create a highly skilled workforce capable of managing complex emergencies efficiently.
