UAE Launches Innovative AI Ecosystem To Support Global Agricultural Development Amid Climate Challenges
The United Arab Emirates has introduced Abu Dhabi’s AI Ecosystem for Global Agricultural Development. This platform aims to provide AI solutions to agricultural regions affected by climate change, supporting communities facing unpredictable weather. This initiative builds on the $200 million UAE–Gates Foundation partnership announced at COP28 to boost agricultural innovation.
In the presence of Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court, and Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, the announcement was made. Almheiri and Gates later participated in the UAE–Gates Partnership Showcase. This event highlighted how Abu Dhabi's research strengths and AI capabilities are being used to assist vulnerable agricultural communities globally.

The ecosystem is supported by four major initiatives: CGIAR AI Hub, Institute for Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI), AgriLLM, and The Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale). These initiatives aim to integrate advanced research with practical solutions for farmers worldwide. The collaborative network includes institutions like Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), NYU Abu Dhabi, ai71, and international partners such as CGIAR and the World Bank.
Bill Gates remarked on the initiative's significance: "Around the world, smallholder farmers are facing the harshest impacts of climate change with the fewest tools to adapt. The AI for Agriculture Ecosystem helps change that by putting practical, data-driven solutions directly in farmers’ hands. I’m grateful for the UAE’s leadership: this initiative helps strengthen food security and support farmers in a warming world."
The CGIAR AI Hub is a global collaborative workspace hosted in Abu Dhabi by ai71 as a core technology partner. It aims to transform agriculture through digital innovation using CGIAR's extensive data from its 13 global research centers. Ismahane Elouafi, CGIAR’s Executive Managing Director, stated: "The AI Agriculture Ecosystem is rooted in science and powered by global collaboration."
The Institute of Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) at MBZUAI offers digital advisory tools and training programs to governments and NGOs. It focuses on enhancing food security by improving conditions for over 43 million smallholder farmers worldwide.
AgriLLM and AIM for Scale
AgriLLM is an open-source large language model developed by ai71 in Abu Dhabi. It processes deep agricultural data from various sources to provide multilingual guidance on climate adaptation and resource management. Currently, four AI agents are being tested with partners to offer region-specific advice.
AIM for Scale is a joint effort funded by the UAE and Gates Foundation based at NYU Abu Dhabi. It aims to deliver AI-powered weather forecasts to smallholder farmers globally. By 2030, it plans to reach 100 million farmers with its services.
Mariam Almheiri emphasized: "The UAE is harnessing artificial intelligence for global good, to help protect the farmers and communities most exposed to climate volatility." She highlighted how partnerships are turning scientific advancements into practical tools that benefit millions of smallholder farmers worldwide.
The ecosystem represents a unified system that transforms advanced research into actionable solutions across various stages—from scientific discovery to field deployment in climate-vulnerable areas.
