UAE Landmarks Illuminate In Support Of World Pneumonia Day To Raise Awareness

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently participated in the global Pneumolight Campaign to commemorate World Pneumonia Day. This initiative aims to highlight the ongoing fight against pneumonia, a leading cause of death among children under five worldwide. As part of the campaign, the UAE illuminated several landmarks, symbolising hope and urging action against this disease.

Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Minister for Medical Affairs and Life Sciences, emphasised the UAE's commitment to global health challenges. "The UAE remains committed to addressing global health challenges, and our participation in the Pneumolight Campaign is a testament to our dedication to fighting pneumonia. As we illuminate our landmarks tonight, we stand in solidarity with the international community to raise awareness and take action to combat and treat this deadly disease. Through cooperation and sustained commitment, we can work towards a world where no child dies from preventable pneumonia."

The Pneumolight Campaign saw 362 iconic monuments across 38 countries lit up in blue. This act aimed to draw attention to the need for increased awareness, education, and action against pneumonia, especially in vulnerable communities. The UAE's involvement underscores the importance of prioritising pneumonia on the global health agenda.

Dr. Catia Cillóniz, Coordinator of the Pneumolight Campaign, highlighted the importance of awareness: "Pneumonia is a treatable and preventable disease; raising awareness about the risk of pneumonia is crucial to fight against pneumonia." Her statement reinforces the campaign's goal of educating people about prevention and treatment options.

The UAE has consistently been at the forefront of global humanitarian efforts, particularly in healthcare. Collaborating with organisations like WHO, UNICEF, and the Red Cross, it supports initiatives that strengthen health systems and improve vaccine access. These partnerships aim to raise awareness about preventable diseases such as pneumonia.

In line with its broader commitment to global health equity, the UAE backs initiatives like the Global Action Plan for Pneumonia and Diarrhea. This plan seeks to reduce child mortality from these diseases through coordinated efforts involving governments, private sectors, and civil society.

The UAE's active role in these initiatives highlights its dedication to combating preventable diseases globally. By participating in campaigns like Pneumolight and supporting international health projects, it demonstrates a strong commitment to improving children's health worldwide.
