UAE Humanitarian Leadership Demonstrated As Gaza Child Receives Life-Saving Transplant In Abu Dhabi
Yas Clinic in Khalifa City has successfully discharged a young Palestinian patient after a life-saving bone marrow transplant. This procedure was conducted under the direct medical supervision of the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC). The UAE's commitment to Gaza is evident through this humanitarian effort, which aims to provide top-tier healthcare to those in need.
The child, diagnosed with DADA-2 deficiency, faced severe immunodeficiency leading to repeated infections and serious complications. He was admitted for seven months and required extensive care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) due to his complex condition. His sister travelled from Gaza to be his matched donor, thanks to support from hospital leadership and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi.

The bone marrow transplant took place last month, and despite a challenging recovery period, the patient showed remarkable resilience. He was recently discharged in stable condition. Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic Khalifa City, stated, "This was an extraordinary case that brought together every element of modern medicine, from genetics and immunology to critical care and transplantation."
A multidisciplinary team managed the case, including PICU physicians, a pediatric surgeon, ENT physicians, and an infectious disease specialist. Their coordination and clinical expertise were crucial throughout the child's extended care. The strong nursing team played a vital role in managing such high-risk patients.
The patient has now returned home to continue his recovery journey. This marks a hopeful new chapter for him and his family while representing a proud achievement for Yas Clinic and ADSCC teams. The case underscores the importance of comprehensive care teams in handling complex medical situations effectively.
