UAE Hosts Workshop On Artemis Accords With Representatives From Over 30 Countries

The UAE, through its Space Agency, recently organised a workshop on the Artemis Accords at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). This event gathered representatives from over 30 of the 55 signatory countries, reaffirming their dedication to peaceful and sustainable space exploration. The workshop aimed to strengthen principles of transparency and responsible space activities.

Participants engaged in discussions to advance the implementation of the Artemis Accords' principles. These include non-interference, interoperability, and orbital debris mitigation. The focus was also on sharing scientific data, registering space objects, and enhancing outreach efforts. A tabletop exercise simulated potential scenarios to encourage collaborative approaches in space activities.

Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, emphasised the UAE’s dedication to international cooperation in space exploration. He stated, "The UAE’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and fostering responsible space exploration reflects values that lie at the heart of the Artemis Accords. Through this workshop, we aim to promote a peaceful, transparent, and sustainable space for future generations."

Al Falasi further noted the importance of collaboration frameworks as space activities evolve. He remarked that the Artemis Accords serve as a guiding light for ensuring openness and safety as humanity ventures deeper into space. "As we witness the evolution of space activities, international collaboration frameworks are becoming highly essential. The Artemis Accords stand as a beacon to ensure that as humanity reaches further into space, we do so while maintaining openness, safety, and mutual respect, so space remains a domain of peace and opportunity for all."

The Abu Dhabi workshop followed earlier meetings held in Poland in 2023 and Canada in 2024. These gatherings aimed to share best practices and address new challenges in sustainable space exploration. They also reinforced collective commitments among participating nations.

The Artemis Accords were introduced by the USA in 2020 with seven initial countries joining, including the UAE. These non-binding principles guide civil space exploration towards safer operations. They align with international treaties like the Outer Space Treaty and others concerning astronaut rescue and return.

This initiative underscores a shared vision for maintaining peace and opportunity in outer space for all involved nations.
