UAE And France Collaborate On Hydrogen And Nuclear Energy Initiatives For Sustainable Development

A delegation from the UAE concluded a three-day visit to France, focusing on collaboration and sharing best practices with French stakeholders. The discussions aimed to explore innovative solutions for upcoming energy transition challenges. This initiative aligns with the UAE's strategy to foster sustainable development and enhance energy security through international partnerships.

Key areas of interest during the visit included advancements in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) regulations, hydrogen technology, nuclear innovation, and decarbonisation strategies. The delegation was led by Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. It also included Mohammed Al Hawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Investment, along with representatives from various UAE organisations.

UAE and France Explore Energy Cooperation

On the first day in Paris, the delegation attended a closed meeting at MEDEF International with French companies' representatives. Discussions centred around ongoing cooperation projects and potential expansions. Both sides shared insights into their national hydrogen strategies, followed by presentations from leading French energy providers on hydrogen development projects.

Nuclear energy technologies were another focal point during these meetings. The delegation received briefings on the French nuclear value chain, nuclear fuel management, and small modular reactors' latest developments. Experts from CSFN, ORANO, CEA, Nuward, Newcleo, and Naarea provided these insights.

The second day featured site visits in Paris. The delegation explored Schneider Electric's Innovation Hub to learn about AI-driven solutions for energy optimisation. They also visited Air Liquide's R&D labs to gain firsthand insights into cutting-edge technologies in gases and services for industry and healthcare.

A representative from the French Civil Aviation Authority discussed SAF regulations and policies. A UAE delegate presented their national approach to increasing SAF reliance to decarbonise aviation. Eng. Al Olama engaged in discussions on sustainability commitments with representatives from Airbus, Total Energies, Safran, Bureau Veritas, and Haffner Energy.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

On the final day in Toulouse, the delegation visited Airbus facilities including the mock-up centre and A350 Final Assembly Line. They also met UAE graduates interning at Airbus. These interactions highlighted the strong ties between France and the UAE that have strengthened over recent years.

Eng. Al Olama expressed gratitude towards French officials for their hospitality during the visit. He stated: "The UAE and France share a firm commitment to continuous progress...I look forward to translating the outcomes of our productive conversations into tangible projects that will help us build sustainable energy systems."

The visit underscored both nations' dedication to innovation and future trends while aiming to support clean energy transitions through strategic partnerships.
