UAE And Finland Strengthen Scientific Ties With MoU On Meteorology And Polar Research
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to enhance collaboration in meteorology and polar research. The signing took place during an NCM delegation's visit to Helsinki, Finland. This marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of NCM, highlighted the importance of this MoU. He stated, "The signing of this MoU with the Finnish Meteorological Institute marks a significant step in strengthening the UAE’s scientific and research capabilities in meteorology and polar studies. We remain committed to collaborating with international partners and exchanging knowledge and expertise, guided by the principles of equality and mutual benefit. This collaboration will contribute to a deeper understanding of climate change and support the development of innovative solutions to global environmental challenges. Such efforts will open new avenues for researchers and scientists from both countries and reinforce the UAE’s growing role as a key player in global polar research."

The MoU focuses on enhancing institutional collaboration in scientific meteorological initiatives. A key priority is exchanging expertise, particularly in polar research, aligning with the UAE's Emirates Polar Programme. This programme aims to establish research labs in both Arctic and Antarctic regions, contributing actively to global scientific research.
During his visit, Dr. Al Mandous engaged in technical meetings with Finnish counterparts. Discussions centred on establishing Emirates Research Labs in polar areas and developing joint research infrastructure. They also explored mechanisms for supporting field research and launching projects focused on climate change impacts on ecosystems.
The partnership includes integrating FMI's advanced space weather services into UAE operations. This integration will enhance capabilities in AI-driven data analysis and operational forecasting. The collaboration benefits sectors like agriculture, aviation, maritime navigation, and disaster risk management.
Prof. Petteri Taalas from FMI expressed appreciation for this partnership: "At FMI, we greatly value our partnership with the UAE, which has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting scientific research in climate and weather-related fields. This MoU provides a practical framework for exchanging expertise and launching joint research projects, including polar studies and space weather services, which will enhance global forecasting capabilities and deepen our understanding of climate change. We look forward to a productive and impactful collaboration that benefits the international scientific community as a whole."
Strengthening Global Meteorological Efforts
Dr. Al Mandous also addressed ongoing reforms within the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). He emphasised updating international frameworks to support evolving needs globally while highlighting sustainable financial support for UN agencies amid current financial challenges.
This collaboration showcases strong bilateral relations between the UAE and Finland. It underscores both nations' commitment to advancing scientific partnerships supporting sustainable development goals while tackling climate challenges globally.
The MoU signifies an important milestone for UAE-Finland relations as they expand their scientific partnership further. Both countries aim at building advanced capacities nationally and globally to address current environmental challenges effectively.
