UAE Ranks Among Top Emerging Economies In AI Readiness According To BCG Study
The UAE is recognised as a leading emerging economy in AI readiness, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) titled "GCC AI Pulse: Mapping the Region’s Readiness for an AI-Driven Future." This report was highlighted at the Dubai AI Assembly during Dubai AI Week. The BCG's 2024 AI Maturity Matrix places the UAE as an AI Contender, alongside 31 other economies, including Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Akram Awad, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, noted that the UAE is set to become a regional leader among global AI Pioneers. He attributed this potential to the country's robust digital infrastructure and strategic initiatives aimed at integrating AI into its economic plans. "Key indicators collectively illustrate a forward-thinking approach to AI by the UAE and outline clear pathways for improvement," he stated.

Other GCC nations such as Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain have been classified under the AI Practitioners category. This classification indicates their growing capabilities in adopting AI technologies. The maturity matrix categorises economies into four types based on their readiness: AI Emergents, Practitioners, Contenders, and Pioneers.
Rami Mourtada, Partner and Director at BCG, emphasised the importance of enhancing private sector involvement and investment in research and development. He stated that these efforts would help elevate R&D outcomes to global innovation standards and expand the local talent pool in AI. "These imperatives will accelerate the UAE’s journey towards a clear status as an AI Pioneer," he said.
Dr. Lars Littig, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, highlighted the significant transformation occurring across the GCC region in terms of AI adoption. He remarked that this collective momentum could position the GCC as one of the most future-ready clusters for global AI innovation. "We’re witnessing a region-wide momentum that has the potential to position the GCC as one of the most future-ready clusters for AI innovation globally," he said.
This regional trend includes countries using AI for specific sectors like optimising oil production or improving supply chains. Such applications allow practitioners to make tangible impacts while advancing their maturity in AI technologies.
The insights from BCG's research suggest that with continued focus on strategic initiatives and investments in technology and talent development, the UAE is well-positioned to solidify its status as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
