UAE Delegation Participates In 34th UN Commission On Crime Prevention And Criminal Justice Session In Vienna
A delegation from the United Arab Emirates, led by Judge Abdul Rahman Al Balooshi, participated in the 34th session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. This event took place in Vienna, Austria, from May 19 to 23, 2025. The UAE's involvement underscores its commitment to international cooperation in criminal justice.
The UAE delegation included representatives from the Ministries of Interior and Justice and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna. This diverse group reflects the UAE's integrated approach to tackling global criminal justice issues. Their participation is part of preparations for the upcoming United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi in April 2026.

During the session, discussions centred on global crime control challenges. Delegations stressed combating crime through enhanced international cooperation, gender equality, human rights respect, capacity building, technology transfer, and updating national laws. The need to combat human trafficking and support victims with rehabilitation was also highlighted.
The UAE presented several statements affirming its dedication to international collaboration for a just future. These statements emphasised the importance of preparatory meetings for the Abu Dhabi 2026 Congress in shaping a global vision for crime prevention and justice.
The UAE delegation hosted a side event titled "The Road to Abu Dhabi," focusing on congress preparations with significant international participation. Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, was a panelist at another event organised by UNODC with INTERPOL and FATF. This event addressed anti-money laundering and terrorism financing efforts.
On the sidelines of the session, numerous bilateral meetings were held by the UAE delegation with member states. These meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation, exchanging expertise, and coordinating positions on priority crime prevention issues.
Preparations for Abu Dhabi Congress
The UAE delegation reiterated that preparations for the 15th UN Congress in Abu Dhabi are progressing well. They aim to produce an international declaration reflecting global consensus on enhancing collective action against crime. This declaration will lay new foundations for future international cooperation in building efficient criminal justice systems.
The session also saw strong calls to combat terrorism comprehensively. Emphasis was placed on coordinating international efforts and strengthening national legislation relevant to this issue.
The UAE's active participation highlights its role in shaping global strategies against crime while preparing for a significant congress at home next year. The focus remains on fostering collaboration and developing effective solutions for contemporary criminal justice challenges worldwide.
