UAE Delegation Concludes Successful Participation At COP29 In Baku, Emphasising Climate Action Commitment
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) concluded its participation at COP29, showcasing its dedication to global climate efforts and the legacy of COP28. President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was present at the World Climate Action Summit's opening. The UAE delegation actively participated in various conference activities, including the handover of the COP Presidency to Azerbaijan on the first day.
Throughout COP29, the UAE demonstrated its commitment to impactful environmental initiatives worldwide. The UAE Pavilion hosted numerous discussions and tours, welcoming thousands of attendees from government, global organisations, and private sectors. The Pavilion served as a platform for signing multiple Memorandums of Understanding and agreements.
The UAE endorsed several declarations related to climate priorities during COP29. These included the COP29 Truce Appeal, Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, Green Energy Pledge, Hydrogen Declaration, and others focused on reducing methane from organic waste and water for climate action. These endorsements reflect the UAE's commitment to addressing critical climate issues.
Significant progress was made in various areas during the conference. Notably, the Loss & Damage Fund became operational with over $940 million amassed. Technological advancements were highlighted as tools for transforming current climate challenges into future opportunities.
The UAE delegation at COP29 comprised over 1,000 members, including ministers from key ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Climate Change and Energy, Energy and Infrastructure, and Health. Prominent figures like H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber were part of this delegation.
Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability and Head of the UAE Delegation at COP29 stated: "Climate action has been embedded in the UAE since its inception...The legacy is an enduring one thanks to the UAE’s climate action efforts." This highlights the nation's long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Innovative Projects and Partnerships
Several initiatives were launched or updated during COP29. These include the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD), Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), AIM for Scale ChatGPT tool for agriculture, Chapter Zero UAE launch, and a 2-GW solar project in Saudi Arabia by Masdar-led consortium.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs led engagements to build momentum for the UN 2026 Water Conference co-hosted with Senegal. Sessions focused on innovative solutions for water-related challenges showcased efforts like Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.
Future Engagements in Climate Action
The UAE continues its climate action work with upcoming events like Global Food Week in Abu Dhabi (26-28 November) focusing on sustainable food systems. Following this is COP16 in Riyadh where further discussions will take place.
In January 2025, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week will gather leaders from governments, private sectors, and civil society to explore clean energy solutions aimed at accelerating sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental spheres.
