UAE Praised for Its Significant Role in Supporting WFP's Global Humanitarian Efforts
In a recent discussion with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024, Cindy H. McCain, the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), extended her gratitude towards the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its steadfast support of WFP's global humanitarian efforts. McCain underscored the UAE's pivotal role in aiding millions globally through financial, in-kind contributions, and strategic partnerships.
McCain highlighted the UAE's effectiveness in ensuring food aid reaches those most in need, especially in conflict-ridden regions. She revealed that the WFP was recently bolstered by a generous donation of $11.7 million from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), aimed at supporting over one million individuals in Gaza. This contribution is part of a broader effort that saw more than 121 million meals provided to vulnerable communities across various countries including Burkina Faso, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Bangladesh between 2022 and 2023.

The Executive Director expressed concern over the global turmoil affecting food security by disrupting supply chains and fueling conflicts, which in turn complicates the delivery of humanitarian aid. With over 333 million people facing acute hunger worldwide, McCain stressed the urgency for global leaders to enhance cooperation and boost humanitarian funding to address these challenges promptly.
McCain pointed out that the persistent high levels of acute hunger, alongside rising malnutrition rates and limited access to nutritious foods, are clear indicators of the dire state of global food insecurity. She called on world leaders to invest in sustainable and long-term programs aimed at bolstering global food security through measures such as supporting sustainable agriculture, improving infrastructure, and enhancing international cooperation.
She also emphasized the importance of leveraging advanced technology to improve food assistance delivery. The WFP has been incorporating innovative solutions like blockchain, satellite imagery, and data analytics to enhance agricultural productivity and monitor food security indicators more effectively.
McCain lauded the WGS as an inspiring platform that fosters global cooperation by convening world leaders to tackle pressing issues. She underscored the necessity of finding long-term solutions for food security and sustainability.
The WFP's recent partnership with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Food Tech Valley was highlighted as a significant step towards revolutionizing global food systems through innovation and technology. McCain expressed optimism about this collaboration leveraging UAE's technological expertise to make impactful changes.
In conclusion, Cindy H. McCain's statements at the WGS 2024 underscore a collective call to action for global leaders and communities to unite in combating food insecurity through innovative solutions, strategic partnerships, and sustained humanitarian efforts. The UAE's role as a key supporter of WFP's mission exemplifies the potential for collaborative efforts to create a more secure and sustainable future for all.
