UAE's Commitment To Sustainability In Aviation Reflects National Identity And Vision
The UAE has long prioritised sustainability, deeply embedding it within its national ethos. This commitment is inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who viewed environmental care as integral to the nation's heritage and growth. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) highlights this in their report, "An Inside Look at Civil Aviation in the UAE," showcasing the country's dedication to sustainable development.
In 2012, the UAE took a significant step by submitting its first State Action Plan for Reducing Aviation Emissions to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). This plan underscored its dedication to reducing aviation's environmental impact. A subsequent plan in 2018 was globally recognised for its excellence. Recently, the GCAA submitted a third edition of this plan, reaffirming its commitment to achieving substantial results.

The UAE's leadership extends to international initiatives like CORSIA, a global scheme adopted by ICAO in 2016. The UAE joined during its voluntary phase in 2020 and launched the region's first digital platform for CORSIA implementation by 2024. This initiative is part of broader transformational projects aimed at enhancing sustainability in aviation.
Domestically, the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategy includes transport as a crucial component. A key initiative is the National Roadmap for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), targeting an annual production of 700 million litres of SAF by 2030. This could cut emissions by 4.8 million tonnes of CO2. To boost global efforts, the UAE introduced GSAM (Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace), fostering SAF investment and collaboration internationally.
The GCAA and Volar Air Mobility have signed an MOU to establish the UAE's first Green Aviation Technology Hub. This hub will promote clean energy solutions and support research in sustainable aviation technologies. It aims to foster collaboration among international stakeholders, regulators, and innovators.
Key Industry Initiatives
The shift towards sustainable aviation is evident through several industry collaborations: ADNOC, BP, and Masdar are working on hydrogen and SAF production from municipal waste; Emirates has committed $200 million to a sustainable aviation fund; Etihad has partnered with SATAVIA for contrail management and carbon credits; Twelve and Etihad are collaborating on SAF using captured CO2; Emirates and Shell Aviation are producing blended SAF to ensure a reliable supply chain in the UAE.
Significant milestones include Etihad’s ecoFlight in 2021 and Emirates’ demonstration flight using 100% SAF in 2023. These efforts highlight the UAE's leadership in sustainable aviation practices.
Hosting Major Global Events
The UAE's role as a host for major ICAO events further underscores its leadership position. In 2023, it hosted the Third ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3), resulting in Dubai announcing the ICAO Global Framework for SAF, LCAF, and other cleaner energies for aviation. This framework aims to reduce CO2 emissions from international aviation by 5% by 2030 through cleaner energy sources.
In February 2025, the UAE will host both the Global Implementation Support Symposium and Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GISS GSAM), alongside a dedicated SAF Congress. These events reinforce its commitment to advancing sustainable aviation on a global scale.
The UAE continues to shape a more sustainable future for aviation through clear vision, innovation, and international cooperation. Its efforts reflect a comprehensive approach that combines national strategies with global partnerships to achieve meaningful progress in reducing aviation's environmental impact.
