UAE Celebrates Full Operation Of Barakah Nuclear Plant, Elevating Clean Energy Output

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced a significant milestone for the UAE with the fourth unit of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant starting commercial operations. This achievement completes ENEC’s commitment to provide clean, abundant electricity to the UAE. The Barakah Plant is now fully operational, generating 40TWh of electricity annually, which is nearly equivalent to New Zealand's yearly consumption.

Barakah's four APR-1400 units are crucial in helping UAE companies reduce their carbon footprint. A substantial 85% of the clean energy certificates managed by EWEC come from Barakah. These certificates enable companies like ADNOC, EGA, and Emirates Steel Arkan to produce greener products that can be sold at a premium, giving Abu Dhabi-based firms a competitive edge.

Barakah Plant Powers UAE with Clean Energy

The plant's operation represents the largest decarbonisation effort in the UAE and the region. It positions the country ahead of its 2030 climate commitments by preventing 22.4 million tons of annual carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 4.6 million cars from roads each year. This contributes significantly to achieving 24% of the nation's 2030 decarbonisation targets.

Despite growing demand, natural gas consumption for power generation in Abu Dhabi is at a 13-year low due to Barakah's contribution to the energy mix. The plant provides up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs and powers enough clean energy for 16 million electric vehicles annually.

The construction of Barakah has fostered a new advanced industry in the UAE, enhancing national studies in nuclear sciences and offering educational opportunities for Emirati youth. Over 2,000 skilled Emiratis have been involved in developing the plant, creating valuable know-how for future projects.

Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of ENEC’s Board of Directors, stated, "In 2008, the UAE's visionary leadership took a data-led approach by issuing a comprehensive policy for civil nuclear energy development. As Unit 4 enters commercial operations, that vision has been realised." He added that this source of clean electricity will attract additional investment from sustainably-minded industries globally.

Operational Excellence and Global Recognition

Eng. Ali Al Hammadi, CEO of Nawah Energy Company, highlighted that safety and compliance with strict regulations remain top priorities. He noted that Barakah has undergone over 496 inspections from FANR and numerous reviews from international bodies like WANO and IAEA. This commitment ensures operational excellence according to local and global standards.

Nasser Al Nasseri, CEO of Barakah One Company, emphasised that Barakah provides a stable power supply for the next 60 years with low pricing volatility. He said this foundation supports growth in both the UAE power sector and among consumers.

Future Prospects

Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, expressed pride in this monumental achievement for the UAE. He noted that integrating nuclear energy into the power mix alongside renewables was a wise decision that boosts energy security and establishes the UAE as a regional leader in this sector.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts global electricity demand will rise by an average of 3.4% annually through 2026 due to factors like AI and EVs. The stable clean electricity provided by nuclear energy is increasingly recognised for its role in decarbonising energy systems.

The full delivery of Barakah places ENEC and the UAE as leaders in contributing to global pledges to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This milestone underscores their pivotal role in achieving Net Zero goals worldwide.
