UAE, Baden-Württemberg Ink Pact for Industrial Cooperation and Decarbonisation

On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany, a significant step was taken towards sustainable industrial development and climate action. The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, have entered into a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI). This agreement was signed by notable figures including Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg; and Thekla Walker, Minister of the Environment, Climate Protection, and Energy of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the UAE's commitment to international collaboration on projects that support sustainable industrial development and contribute to global climate action. He referenced the UAE's leadership at COP28, where it launched several initiatives aimed at increasing the industry's contribution to global decarbonization targets. Among these initiatives is the Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap, aiming for a 93% reduction in emissions by 2050 through solutions like CCUS and clean energy across hard-to-abate industries.

UAE and Germany Advance in Green Industry

This partnership aligns with the UAE's Operation 300bn and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. It focuses on identifying projects in sustainable industrial development, supporting technology solutions, and joint investments to enhance supply chain resilience for both countries.

Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut emphasized the importance of establishing an efficient hydrogen economy to future-proof Baden-Württemberg as a globalized business and technology location. She noted the early recognition of the UAE's potential for economic cooperation opportunities for Baden-Württemberg’s companies. This led to the establishment of a business representation office in the UAE in November 2022 to support companies entering the market in the UAE and Gulf region.

Thekla Walker spoke on the significance of hydrogen as a fuel for a climate-neutral industrial society. The partnership aims to create a common market for green hydrogen, leveraging the UAE's solar energy capabilities for green hydrogen production and Baden-Württemberg's capacity to produce climate-neutral hydrogen.

The collaboration will involve various private and public sector entities from both regions under the "Make it in the Emirates" initiative. Key areas for collaboration include AI, smart manufacturing, smart health, aerospace, accelerating industrialization, decarbonization initiatives in line with national strategies, and goals of the Paris Agreement. Additionally, this partnership will focus on capacity building and skill development through joint research and internships in companies involved in priority projects.

This JDI represents a significant step towards fostering bilateral relations between the UAE and the State of Baden-Württemberg. It not only aims at promoting green industrial investments but also at ensuring a sustainable future through innovative solutions in energy production and industrial development.
