Inaugural TradeTech Forum Explores Technology's Role In Transforming Global Trade

The TradeTech Forum, a significant event aimed at exploring the integration of technology in global trade, was recently held in Abu Dhabi. This forum was part of the 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation and marked a pivotal moment for the TradeTech Global Initiative. Launched by the UAE and the World Economic Forum, this initiative seeks to harness advancements in technology to make global trade more efficient, secure, accessible, and cost-effective.

Key figures such as Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, CEO of DP World, Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum, and Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, were among the speakers. They discussed the potential of emerging technologies in modernizing trade across various sessions. Topics ranged from digitalizing customs procedures to enabling trade for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) through technology and innovation.

TradeTech Forum Transforms Global Trade

Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, highlighted the transformative potential of advanced technology in global trade. He emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in optimizing shipping routes and stock movements, blockchain in customs procedures, and predictive analysis for crisis management. Dr. Al Zeyoudi's vision for TradeTech is to position the UAE as a global leader in its development and deployment.

During the forum, Dr. Al Zeyoudi unveiled a whitepaper titled 'Regulation 5.0 for Future Trade Tech.' This document outlines the impact of trade technology on global commerce and proposes a unified global regulatory framework to oversee future trading systems. The paper stresses the importance of regulating trade technology to ensure fair competition, consumer protection, privacy, and safeguarding trade-related data.

Børge Brende discussed global growth trends and the challenges facing trade in the upcoming year. He underscored the role of technology in making trade more resilient and aligned with societal values. The forum also served as a platform for private sector companies and startups to showcase their TradeTech solutions. Notable participants included Adrianople Group with its comprehensive map of Special Economic Zones worldwide, Jetstream, an AI-powered cross-border platform provider in Africa, and Enigio, a Swedish fintech company offering digital solutions for various trade processes.

The TradeTech Forum is set to become an annual event that will assess progress in modernizing the international trading system. It aims to promote collaboration and partnerships to accelerate its development. This forum represents the first step towards building a global movement dedicated to bringing lasting change to the global trading system.
