Sustainable Future Starts With Family: MOCCAE Announces UAE Environment Day Theme 2026

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has set "Sustainable Future Starts with Family" as the theme for the 29th National Environment Day 2026. The announcement aligns with the direction of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who named 2026 the "Year of Family." The theme links household behaviour with national climate goals and long-term economic resilience.

The ministry stated that families are a core driver of environmental responsibility in the UAE. Everyday choices at home, such as how people consume, travel and manage waste, influence emissions and resource use. By focusing on households, National Environment Day 2026 aims to support the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and strengthen community participation in climate action.

Sustainable Future Starts with Family

To support the theme, the ministry has issued the Practical Guide to Sustainable Living for families across the country. The guide is presented as a step-by-step reference for daily life. It is available in Arabic and English so that different segments of society can use the material easily and apply the suggestions at home.

The Practical Guide to Sustainable Living covers seven key lifestyle areas. These include food, energy, water, waste, gardening, transport and health. The guide explains how simple changes can reduce environmental impact while maintaining comfort and wellbeing.

Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak said the chosen theme reflects the President’s focus on placing family at the centre of national development. Al Dahak noted that this approach draws on the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who encouraged people to treat sustainability as a daily practice rather than a separate policy area.

Al Dahak explained that climate and environmental action often begins inside homes. Small steps such as limiting unnecessary consumption, using resources carefully and separating waste can create measurable outcomes over time. These choices also help children and younger family members understand environmental responsibility through everyday experience.

Al Dahak added that the ministry’s mandate is not limited to drafting regulations. The ministry also works to equip the community with information, tools and clear guidelines. This support is intended to help families contribute to net-zero goals, conserve ecosystems and back wider nature protection efforts across the UAE.

The ministry called on government bodies, private companies and civil society groups to use the same National Environment Day 2026 theme in their initiatives. The aim is to embed family-centred sustainability into organisational culture and social practices. The ministry said such cooperation can link social cohesion with shared responsibility for the environment.

MOCCAE highlighted that the theme reflects the UAE’s established commitment to sustainability, shaped by respect for nature and future generations. The ministry stressed that protecting the environment is a common duty and an important factor for long-term prosperity. National Environment Day 2026 is therefore positioned as a platform to align family life with the UAE’s strategic climate objectives.
