Sultan Bin Ahmed Reviews Key Developments At Sharjah Academy For Astronomy And Space Sciences
H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, recently visited the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST). During his visit, he reviewed the Academy's latest projects and development plans. The tour included updates on facilities designed to educate visitors about astronomy and space sciences using modern educational methods.
He was briefed through a visual presentation on several ongoing projects at the Academy. These include the CubeSat programme and the Meteorite Laboratory Exhibition, which focuses on cataloguing meteorites and impact fragments. Additionally, there are efforts to develop space debris monitoring stations and establish optical and radio astronomical observatories in collaboration with both public and private entities.
The Academy is advancing its solar and lunar observation systems. This project supports national initiatives for crescent moon sighting crucial for Islamic calendar verification. It also aims to strengthen scientific infrastructure for observing solar and lunar phenomena, enabling participation in global astronomical observation efforts.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed was informed about the Academy's involvement in the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt with the UAE Space Agency. This mission seeks to study seven asteroids within the main belt. It also aims to bolster the UAE’s private space sector while building national capabilities in space research, innovation, and advanced technology development.
The Sharjah Planetarium has been a significant attraction, drawing over 4,500 visitors during June and July alone. It offers 20 shows weekly to engage audiences. Development plans for the planetarium include raising community awareness through specialised workshops, space-related films, and partnerships with various institutions and astronomical centres.
H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed's visit highlighted SAASST's commitment to advancing astronomy education and research. The Academy continues to play a vital role in enhancing knowledge about space sciences through its innovative programmes and collaborations.
