Sobha Realty Commits AED 500 Million To Support Arab Reading Challenge Initiative
In a significant move, Sobha Realty has pledged AED500 million to support the Arab Reading Challenge. This initiative, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to foster reading and learning among students. It also seeks to reinforce the Arabic language as a cultural cornerstone and identity marker. The initiative aligns with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives' mission to positively impact Arab societies.
The announcement was made during an event at the Dubai World Trade Centre, where Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary-General of MBRGI, and PNC Menon, Founder and Chairman of Sobha Realty, signed an agreement. This contribution will help sustain the Arab Reading Challenge's journey since its inception in 2015 as the largest Arabic-language reading competition globally.

Sobha Realty's funding will be directed towards developing an endowment in Dubai. The proceeds will support strategic plans for knowledge and cultural programmes under the Arab Reading Challenge. These initiatives aim to empower young Arabs by enhancing their access to modern sciences and global achievements, contributing to a brighter future for the Arab world.
Mohammad Al Gergawi highlighted the challenge's success in spreading knowledge and preserving Arabic. He stated that it reflects Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision of inspiring new generations to read and innovate. "Sobha Realty’s contribution reflects the community’s unique engagement with efforts made by the UAE and MBRGI," he said.
PNC Menon expressed enthusiasm about supporting this noble cause. "We are excited to be among the contributors," he said. Menon emphasised their commitment to social responsibility and helping students access knowledge across various fields. He hopes this endowment will significantly support students in honing their skills.
The Arab Reading Challenge has seen remarkable growth over its nine editions. Participation soared from 3.6 million students initially to over 32 million in its ninth edition, which concluded on 23 October 2023. This represents a growth of more than 795 percent, involving over 132,000 schools from 50 countries.
Impact on Education Systems
A significant milestone was achieved on 18 December 2024 when the Arab League encouraged education ministries to integrate the challenge into curricula. Recognising it as a leading cultural project strengthens Arabic as a heritage vessel. The challenge awards AED11 million annually across various categories, including AED500,000 for the overall champion.
The Arab Reading Challenge was launched in 2015 by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as a major literacy initiative. It aims to promote reading among students across the Arab world and beyond while strengthening language skills like comprehension and expression. The challenge seeks to instill a lasting passion for knowledge in young Arabs.
This initiative not only nurtures love for Arabic but also exposes youth to diverse cultures' customs and beliefs. By doing so, it equips them with tools for a better future while building character through exposure to different traditions worldwide.
