AI's Impact On Archiving Highlighted At The Sixteenth Archival Education Research Institute In Abu Dhabi
The Sixteenth Archival Education Research Institute 2024 (AERI) commenced in Abu Dhabi on Monday. This event, organised by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi alongside the National Library and Archives (NLA), runs from 7th to 11th October. It aims to advance archival studies by nurturing a dynamic network of researchers, educators, students, and professionals.
Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Director-General of the National Library and Archives, highlighted their dedication to integrating artificial intelligence and modern technologies into archiving. He stressed the importance of using contemporary standards in documentation and training young individuals to preserve the nation’s memory.

The institute places emphasis on supporting doctoral students and academic staff with thesis writing, grant proposal preparation, publishing, and career development. This initiative is designed to foster a robust academic environment for those involved in archival studies.
Al Ali announced plans for new qualification and academic programmes in collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. These will start with a professional certification, followed by a bachelor’s programme in records and archives management, and eventually a master’s degree in records management and archival studies.
Coordination is also underway to introduce a doctoral programme in this field soon. This expansion aims to provide comprehensive educational pathways for aspiring archivists and researchers.
Hamad Al Mutairi, Director of the Archives Department at the National Library and Archives, discussed the UAE National Library and Archives’ roles and strategic plan. He emphasised the shared responsibilities among various societal groups like individuals, legal experts, technicians, journalists, urging collective efforts to enhance national memory preservation.
Workshops on Digital Preservation
A workshop titled "An Introduction to Transkribus: How to Use Handwritten Text Recognition in the Digital Cataloguing of Historical Documents" was conducted. Participants also engaged in sessions on "AI in the Archive: From Research to Education", "The Evolution and Management of Archival Collections and Policies" and "Revolutionising Digital Preservation Education."
This gathering underscores the commitment to advancing archival education through innovative methods. By fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, it seeks to ensure that historical documents are preserved effectively for future generations.
