Sikka Art & Design Festival 2023: Al Shindagha Houses Turn Into A Canvas Of Creativity

The 12th Sikka Art & Design Festival, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is currently underway in Dubai, showcasing the talents of over 500 creatives from the local, regional, and international scenes. Hosted in the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood, this event is a cornerstone for Dubai's cultural sector, promoting an environment where artists can flourish and reinforcing Dubai's status as a global hub for culture and creativity.

The festival is distinguished by its diverse range of exhibits spread across various houses, each offering a unique perspective on art and design. The Digital Khaleeji House stands out with digital works from GCC artists like Dana Al Rashid, whose prints include 'Digitising Life,' 'The Wise One and The Plague,' and 'Do You Eat Alone?'. Ahmed Al Kuwaiti's 'Halwa' and Mohamed Al Mansoori's 'Solitude' are also notable contributions that delve into metaphorical dreams and introspection.

In the Khaleeji House, Afnan Albladi's 'Lifelines' installation captures the strength of Arab women through abstract art. Fatima Alketbi and Ayesha F's 'Mahabah' explores cultural communication. The Urban House by The Workshop DXB features Dina Saadi's 'The Loom of Light,' advocating for community support, alongside May Ali's exploration of light in 'Happy 2.0'.

House 436 presents innovative pieces like Alyazia Ahmed Alfalasi's 'Unnoticeable,' discussing Bedouin society integration. Ayesha Bin Haider's 'Scripted Scribbles – Tracking Doodles' and Soyoung Park's 'Memory Excavation Kit – Tracking Doodles' offer insights into the transformation of illustrations and childhood memories.

House 314 showcases Ameera Bu Kadra's 'Literary Reflections,' blending photography with literature, and Kirsten Sands Decker's 'Traceless,' which delves into carbonless travel. The 'Archiving The Now' House focuses on the country's cultural and daily life, providing interactive sessions for the youth.

Eco-friendly wall art inspired by the UAE desert is featured in House 207 by Batool Alblooshi, while Aziza Mohammed Alhammadi expresses patience through her painting 'Patience'. Boubaker Boukhari’s jewellery installation 'Silhouettes of Shadows' and Jessica Mai Locke's 'Floral Wall Art' are also showcased here.

House 206 displays works by Abdulla Alneyadi, Jassim Al Awadhi, Rawan Mohi, Samia Saleh, and Sara Kamar. The Emirates Fine Arts Society House exhibits pieces from 14 artists including Dr. Abeer Essa and Khaled Hounaysh. TODA House introduces an interactive art experience via smartphones with digital artworks by Diaa Allam and Ergun Tan Cayiroglu.

Finally, House 200 features immersive experiences by artists such as Fatima Albudoor, Hend Mohammed Almurid, and Shama Alsuwaidi. Fatima Albudoor’s 'Tangled Seas', Hend Mohammed Almurid’s 'Hend’s Garden', and Shama Alsuwaidi’s 'Cluster' explore themes of freedom, childhood memories, and the search for contentment respectively.

The Sikka Art & Design Festival not only showcases a wide array of artistic talents but also plays a crucial role in supporting Dubai’s cultural landscape. It offers a platform for artists to display their work while contributing to the city’s reputation as a leading center for culture and creativity.
