Sikka Art & Design Festival 2023 Inaugurated By Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed In Dubai

H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, inaugurated the 13th Sikka Art & Design Festival at Al Shindagha Historic District. The event, supported by Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, showcases Emirati and GCC artists. It runs until 9th February, featuring over 350 artworks and installations alongside performances, workshops, and discussions.

The festival is a key part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy. This year's edition is the largest yet in terms of activities and artistic showcases. It aims to expand opportunities for Emirati and UAE-based creatives while enhancing Dubai's aesthetic appeal. The festival serves as a platform for both established and emerging artists to display their creativity.

Sheikha Latifa toured the festival, interacting with artists and appreciating their unique projects. She highlighted the diversity of works that embody Dubai’s cultural essence. During her visit, she explored interactive spaces for skill development and innovative art installations across 19 houses in Al Shindagha Historic District.

Sheikha Latifa also visited key creative spaces like the World Stage Design House for theatrical performances and The Khaleeji House for GCC artists. She affirmed Dubai's status as a global cultural destination under His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's leadership. The festival has become a vital meeting point for regional artists.

Sheikha Latifa stated that the Sikka Art & Design Festival has evolved into an incubator of creativity. "The Sikka Art & Design Festival has evolved into a true incubator of creativity, bringing together every element of the artistic landscape," she said. The festival fosters exchanges with Arab and international talents, strengthening Dubai’s position as a cultural hub.

The festival supports creativity through its dynamic programme, nurturing talent and skill development. It aligns with the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy to establish a sustainable artistic ecosystem. Through its Sikka Platform, Dubai Culture fosters year-round support for emerging and established artists.

Diverse Programme Highlights

This year's festival features exhibitions, entertainment events, performances, and visual arts showcases curated by Sheikh Maktoum bin Marwan Al Maktoum. Over 40 artworks align with the Dubai Public Art Strategy to enrich the emirate’s visual identity. Thirteen murals by renowned artists reflect urban art aesthetics.

The festival champions inclusivity with dedicated spaces for People of Determination to express their creativity. Highlights include the first-ever water-based installation and Wind Canvas Exhibition featuring six Emirati artists. Visitors can enjoy immersive experiences through these innovative artistic displays.

Cultural Celebrations

The flagship event of Dubai Art Season includes over 30 regional and international participations; over 450 workshops; nearly 100 live performances; and 13 theatrical productions across three outdoor venues. Six orchestral performances feature shows by Firdaus Orchestra led by A.R. Rahman; Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra; and Dubai City Sound.

A special night dedicated to Emirati music will honour the nation’s musical heritage. Nine piano performances by House of Pianos offer visitors unique experiences alongside a bicycle-powered storytelling performance. Initiatives like Merin Public Art Pavilion explore architectural aesthetics while Creatives on Wheels blend shadow performances with oud music.

Supporting Creative Entrepreneurs

Visitors can indulge in culinary experiences with over 50 homegrown F&B concepts participating this year. House of Saffron hosts supper clubs led by nine chefs, merging art with gastronomy. Additionally, over 50 retail stores mark a significant increase from last year’s edition, boosting opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

The festival's growing influence is evident as Dubai Culture received over 1,000 applications this year—a notable increase from previous editions. Organised in partnership with various local authorities including Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai Police; it strengthens collaboration among key stakeholders in supporting creative industries.
