Shurooq Unveils 'Sharjah: The Capital Of Culture' Book Celebrating Cultural Heritage
H.H. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), recently attended the launch of "Sharjah: The Capital of Culture." This publication, a collaboration with Assouline, highlights Sharjah's cultural identity and global influence. It marks their second joint effort after "Mleiha: Ancient Treasures of the UAE" in 2024.
The book delves into Sharjah's evolution across seven chapters, covering architecture, art, education, environment, literature, museums, and craftsmanship. It features notable sites like Heart of Sharjah and Mleiha National Park. Additionally, it documents significant milestones such as Faya Palaeolandscape's UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription and the Sharjah International Book Fair.

Sheikha Bodour emphasised that Sharjah’s cultural journey is an ongoing dialogue between past and future. She stated, "Every initiative born in Sharjah, including this collaboration with Assouline, reflects our belief that progress thrives when identity and innovation move hand in hand." Her recent appointment as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Education and Book Culture underscores this vision.
The exclusive launch event at Sharjah’s House of Wisdom offered an immersive experience. Attendees enjoyed 3D architectural displays, sculptural art installations, live Emirati craftsmanship demonstrations, calligraphy performances by Oday Ibrahim Al Shalah, music, and culinary artistry by Michelin-starred Chef Meera Al Naqbi.
Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of Shurooq, highlighted the publication's embodiment of Sharjah’s vision. He remarked that culture, heritage, and knowledge are central to progress. The book reaffirms Shurooq’s mission to showcase Sharjah’s achievements through projects rooted in authenticity and innovation.
Prosper Assouline from Assouline Publishing expressed honour in working on the project. He noted that while cherishing its heritage and culture deeply, Sharjah embraces modern experiences reflecting its vibrant spirit.
Global Recognition
Sharjah has gained global recognition as UNESCO Cultural Capital of the Arab Region (1998), Capital of Islamic Culture (2014), and World Book Capital (2019). These accolades highlight its dedication to culture and learning. The book is available at the House of Wisdom, on Assouline.com, and select international bookstores.
This partnership between Shurooq and Assouline underscores a shared belief in culture's power to foster understanding. It also highlights storytelling as a means to promote dialogue. Through art and history documentation efforts like these publications demonstrate Shurooq’s commitment to sharing the emirate’s story globally.
